Play Mountain Place, founded in 1949, is the one of the oldest humanistic alternative schools in the US.
Although Play Mountain's approach differs somewhat from the British school, Play Mountain is widely known as "the Summerhill of the West".
Play Mountain encourages the child's self-conscious control over initiating, planning, organizing and carrying out activities - the joy of learning is bound up in the joy of doing.

A (very) Brief History of Play & Play Therapy Theories
Play was therefore the means whereby the child manages the transition between the inner world of the psyche and outer reality and thus "always on the theoretical line between the subjective and that which is objectively perceived" (Winnicott 1988:59)
Play is the child's natural medium for expression and in play therapy, the child can play out feelings of tension, frustration, insecurity, aggression, fear, bewilderment and confusion.
What is clear though, is that play is crucial to the development of children, and given that, it can be utilised to identify and resolve trauma that the child may have experienced in their lives.

Alan Bennett was trained as a historian (his specialist subject was Richard II's knights) and he taught as a junior lecturer at Magdalen College, Oxford until Beyond the Fringe made history history for him - a joke he cracks in a slighter form in the introduction to his history play, The Madness of George III.
Accordingly, what we mean by "history" and what we hope to transmit when we teach it as an academic subject are questions bound to be thrown up, given the nature and context of the piece.

N England, the chronicle play seems suddenly to have risen into vogue during the last decade of the sixteenth century.
A long list of historical plays can be made, showing how great was the interest of the public in the presentation of drama dealing with the national chronicles.
It was this play which gave the impetus to the great choir of singers and playwrights who filled the years up to and into the seventeenth century; and it went far towards fixing the type of English historical tragedy.

Renaissance Forum: Volume Two, Number Two, Autumn 1997: Steve Longstaffe
The critical history of the English history play appears to register the tension this necessitates for a Bardocentric view of literary history.
And once it is assumed that Shakespeare's plays are central, they can be praised — paradoxically — for their willingness to break generic cover, for their blending satire or tragedy with history, for providing the ultimate comic history, even, in the early plays, for absorbing elements of romance and the heroic play.
Meantime, revaluing the histories allows a revaluation of the early Shakespeare, which puts Marlowe in the shade, and draws the sting of the Jonsonian challenge to the Bard in tragedy and comedy (and, of course, his superiority in the effete aristocratic genres of pageantry and masque).

English History Play in the Age of Shakespeare
Since the subject matter of history is not the unchangeable and eternal, but transitory events, a dichotomy thus arose in classical times between history which was regarded as transitory and unknowable, and the agents of history which were considered substantial, unchanging in form, and thus knowable.
But if a play appears to fulfill what we know the Elizabethans considered to be the legitimate purposes of history, and if it is drawn from a chronicle source which we know that at least a large part of the contemporary audience accepted as factual, we may call it a history play.
Plays based upon such legends, although they may have serious political undertones, as does Hamlet, cannot be called history plays, for their political implications are secondary to the dominant purposes of the plays.

Natural History: PLAY'S the THING - marsupials at play
The young of many animals engage in playful behavior--loosely defined as vigorous, frequently complex movements that are performed (often repeatedly) for no apparent reason or immediate benefit and that generally have counterparts in serious adult behavior.
Having long been interested in why some animals play and others do not, I decided in 1985 that the time had come to take a look at marsupials--a large and diverse group of mammals including kangaroos, wombats, and koalas and characterized by the young completing their development in an external pouch.
If metabolic rate was of prime importance in the evolution of play, then all marsupials--with their invariant rates--should play (or not play) about the same amount.

 Tartuffe
According to his assailants, he had at length thrown aside the mask altogether, and under pretense of exposing hypocrisy was seeking to undermine the foundations of religion itself.
Roullés, the curé of Siant Barthélemy, took upon himself to damn the author of Tartuffe on his own authority, and another virulent denouncer of the play was the bishop of Autun, supposed to be the original of the stage imposter.
Irritated by his disappointment, Molière registered a vow that, sooner or later, the interdiction should be set aside, and before long awakened such a friendly interest in his drama among the leaders of society as to induce the king to withdraw his prohibition.

Marxist plays, for example, illustrate an historical dialectic leading to the emergence of Communism, while feminist historians expose the biases of a male dominated hegemony and confront the role of gender in history.
This book investigates how British history plays since 1956 reflect the methods and values of New History, in contrast to traditional biographical dramas that depict the lives of great men in the past.
Both playwrights and critics confront the implications of the idea that history is constructed and not simply found, and new approaches to history demand innovations in the staging and structuring of plays.

The conceit of this one-man play by historian Howard Zinn is that Karl Marx has been brought back to life--but, through a bureaucratic mix-up, winds up not in the Soho district of London where he lived and worked in the 19th century, but the modern-day SoHo district of New York City.
And while Zinn was bending the rules of time and history, he decided he'd go ahead and submit Marx's idea to an anarchist critique as well, and wrote in an account of a fictional night of drinking with Bakunin.
But what this play does succeed in doing is offering a succinct and engaging summary and interpretation of the writings and ideas of Karl Marx, and encourages further reading (even pointing the reader in the right direction at the end of the script).

Also known as a chronicle play, a history play is set in a specific historical period, rather than based on myth or legend.
Early English history plays were closely aligned to pageants and included scenes of military conflict.
Since then the form has not been used very frequently, although plays such as Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" (1953), which deals with the Salem witch-trials of 1692, have been produced with success.
