Baseball - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Baseball is a team sport, in which a fist-sized ball is thrown by a player called a pitcher and hit with a bat.
Baseball is played between two teams of nine players each on a baseball field, usually under the authority of one or more officials, called umpires.
Baseball history is full of heroes and goats—men who in the heat of the moment distinguished themselves with a timely hit or catch, or an untimely strikeout or error.

Hit (baseball) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In baseball statistics, a hit (denoted by H), sometimes called a base hit, is credited to a batter when the batter safely reaches first base after hitting the ball into fair territory, without the benefit of an error or a fielder's choice.
The hit is scored the moment the batter reaches first base safely - if the runner is put out while attempting a double or triple on the same play, he still gets credit for the hit.
A hit for one base is called a single - the number of singles is equal to the total number of hits minus the number of extra base hits.

Baseball statistics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Traditionally, statistics like batting average for batters (the number of hits divided by the number of at bats) and earned run average (approximately the number of runs given up by a pitcher per nine innings) have governed the statistical world of baseball.
However, the advent of sabermetrics brought an onslaught of new statistics that better gauge a player's performance and contributions to his team from year to year.
It combines the hitter's on base percentage ([hits + walks + number of times hit by pitches] divided by [number of times at bat + walks + number of times hit by a pitch + number of sacrifice flies]) with their slugging percentage (total bases divided by at bats).

This is an advanced statistic which requires the complete understanding of on base percentage, slugging average and a park adjustment factor.
Total Baseball has adjusted OBP and SA for the player's home park and League OBP and League SA are the league average for each statistic respectively.
Therefore, the statistic is meant to estimate the impact of base-stealers, which, other than the elite base-stealers, rarely amounts to more than a few runs per year for each team.

The Ultimate Error (baseball) - American History Information Guide and Reference
In baseball, an error is the act, in the judgment of the official scorer, of a fielder misplaying a ball in a manner that allows a batter or runner to reach one or more additional bases, on a play that would normally be completed successfully with ordinary effort.
It normally does not count as a hit and the batter will not be credited for any RBIs when runs are scored—unless, in the scorer's judgment, the batter would have reached first base safely but one or more of the additional base(s) reached was the result of the fielder's mistake.
Arguably, one weakness of the error as a statistic is that mental misjudgments, such as failure to cover a base, are not considered errors.

In baseball, being hit by a pitch refers to the batter being hit in some part of the body by a pitch from the pitcher.
In baseball statistics, hit by pitch (HBP) records the number of times a batter is awarded first base by virtue of being hit by a pitched ball.
Pitching inside is a common and legal tactic in baseball, and many players make use of brushback pitches, or pitches aimed underneath the chin, to keep players away from the plate.

But left-handed batters who can use the inside-out swing to hit the ball to left can add points to their average as well - Wade Boggs practically coined the term "wall double," and Fred Lynn, Carl Yastrzemski, and of course Ted Williams all learned to use the Wall.
