Hit Man: A Technical Manual for Independent Contractors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hit Man: A Technical Manual for Independent Contractors is a book written under the pseudonym Rex Feral and published by Paladin Press in 1983.
The book is a how-to on starting a career as a hit man and fulfilling contracts.
May 21, 1999, Paladin Press' insurance company decided to settle the case, giving the families of those killed by the hit man several million dollars, agreeing to destroy the remaining 700 copies of the book in their possession, and surrendering any rights they have to publish and reproduce the work.

Contract killing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A person who carries out a contract killing is sometimes known as a contract killer or hit man.
In many countries with judicial systems, contract killings are examples of a situation in which contracts are unenforceable by law (in the sense that the customer cannot sue for specific performance and the contract killer cannot sue for his pay).
Both a hit man and his customer can be found guilty of homicide.

It is my opinion that the professional hit man fills a need in society and is, at times, the only alternative for "personal" justice.
Since most men are capable of carrying out their threats and wishes only in their heads, it becomes necessary for a man of action to step in and do what is required: a special man for whom life holds no real meaning and death holds no fear...
One man learns to kill in times of war and spends the rest of his lie trying to forget the horror, while his brother may consider all his wartime efforts a justifiable part of his past having no effect on his present.

Deliberate Intent is the riveting account of the landmark Hit Man case, by noted First Amendment attorney Rod Smolla, who risked reputation and career when he took on a cause that seemed to oppose his strongest beliefs.
The subsequent criminal trial became known as the Hit Man case, and after Horn and Perry were convicted of murder, the victims' families surprised the nation by filing an unprecedented wrongful death suit against Paladin Press, publisher of Hit Man. In a controversial turn of events, Paladin was being blamed for the murders.
Smolla initially declined, but after reading Hit Man and likening it to "a loaded pistol or a vial of poison," he decided to take on the case, even though it seemed to go against his abiding belief in the First Amendment.

The value of "Hit Man" is difficult to discern, as the Washington Post suggested in an editorial supporting the suit.
For example, "Hit Man" provides directions for choosing guns, shooting to kill, even for drilling the serial number off of a rifle, which Perry did, exactly as instructed.
While the plaintiffs' lawyers say they don't dispute Paladin's right to publish books like "Hit Man," they think that the publisher should be liable for damages when one of its readers actually acts on its instructions and harms someone.
