Hit of the Week Records was a record label based in the United States of America in the early 1930s.
Distinctively, "Hit of the Week"s were made not of shellac as was usual for gramophone record of the era, but of a patented blend of paper and resin called Durium.
However as the economy continued to contract the label was unable to turn a profit, and the last "Hit of the Week"s were produced in June of 1932.

Last week I mentioned that the later five minute Hit of the Week records were often broken into two "tracks" each featuring a different selection.
This particular recording was recorded in March 1932 and hit the newsstands on April 14.
(Hit of the Week M-5-A-I) I do not know much about Erno Rapee except for the fact that, during the early 1920s, he was the director of the Capital Grand Orchestra out of the Capital Theatre in New York City.

The large stock of unsold HIT OF THE WEEK records was dumped in the US and Europe during the second half of the 1930s.

The record starts out traditionally enough with a pounding drum intro but it may be a surprise that the sound that creeps up on you and takes over the driving of the rhythm is that of a harmonica.

One thing about the old Columbia "Viva-Tonal" electric records of the 1920s and early 1930s is that they were some of the best made records of the time and often sound surprisingly good even after having been subjected to decades of abuse.
This record was recorded on November 17, 1914 and appeared in stores in early 1915.

That album was recorded in two hours one night after a gig at the ICA at Regent Sound in Denmark Street - in mono.
A lot of that was recorded for a show we did at the ICA about Guillaume Appollinaire called 'J' Emerveille' or 'I Wonder' with Tom Kempinski who later wrote 'Duet For One' and became a good playwright.
Anyway we put a band together and recorded an album which was frankly a bit schizoid, a bit of a mess because there was Bob's stuff and my stuff and it didn't really meet in the middle.

Johnny Cash has had many hits over the years including 1963's "Ring Of Fire." Written by June Carter (before she was June Carter Cash) and Merle Kilgore, the song idea came from a book of Elizabethian poetry that used to belong to June's uncle, A.P. Carter.
Anita was in the studio recording an album and needed another song, so June and Merle wrote "Ring Of Fire" in fifteen minutes.
Anita recorded "Love's Ring Of Fire," but it wasn't a smash hit until Johnny cut it as "Ring Of Fire" for his own album in 1963.

After two successful hits, Howard and his (then)wife, country singer Jan Howard, moved their family to Nashville in 1960 to pursue a full-time music career.
After Hank left for work, I sang what he had and timed it with my watch and it seemed like it wasn’t long enough, so I wrote another section the same length as the first half and took it to Hank at his office and he liked it and that was about it.
While her life was way too short, she had enough time to record heaps of great music to leave a legacy which will span many more generations and genres to come.

Phillip didn't start to concentrate seriously on his own recording career until the late 1970s, having only released half a dozen 45s prior to that, so he wasn't considered to be a very prolific artist.
In fact it may be that Phillip didn't ever record the song himself as it was written in his car en route to the studio.
Of all his compositions, this one has proved to be a particularly adaptable song with successful versions recorded in soul, reggae and pop styles.

I’d been reading about the fascinating archival work done by Archeophone Records, and in particular became intrigued by their reissue of 46 “Hit of the Week” records from the early 1930s (you can – and should – read all about the Depression-era phenomenon of weekly, cardboard-backed, cheap-as-dirt records here).
We play CDs of these Hit of the Week records during intermissions and sell them at the concession stand.
The one previous owner was a huge collector of 78s and especially cardboard records.
