  Hitch / Bewitched (2005) [2 Discs / SBS] - DVD
Hitch is an amiable if rote romantic comedy that maximizes the charms of its quartet of leads.
Unfortunately, the film mines most of its narrative ore from the tiresome notion that modern-day males are complete idiots, as mystified by the female gender as a coyote is by the moon.
The moves are as pre-programmed as they get, but Hitch is good enough for a blind date or a post-dinner rental, where the expectations are a little lower.

about hitch, hitch review, hitch poster
The scene in which Sara and Hitch meet meta-cute at a downtown lounge -- literally, since their conversation revolves around what he would say to her if he were trying to pick her up -- is the smartest bit in the movie, and it's Mendes who hones the banter to an edge.
A sequence in which Hitch crashes a speed-dating event and angrily tells Sara off is the last worthy moment, and it's also the last to touch the jangling neurotic nerve of modern singlehood that ''Hitch taps before turning complacent.
For a while, though, the movie looks to be the very model of the modern major date flick, and again, that can be OK even if you're the one stalking into a multiplex carrying the collected essays of Camille Paglia.

Yes the humor in Hitch is of a decidedly sophomoric nature, but particularly in the sequences where Smith and James share the screen, Hitch is a comic knockout.
Hitch is tailor made for his smarmy, self-absorbed persona, and Smith is wise to let a film like this take the piss out of his big movie-star image.
If Hitch is an accurate indication, I think we can look for James to eventually stake out a place for himself among the great comics of the silver screen.

“Hitch” is a pretty cute movie in its own right, and it’s slated for release at the perfect time of year.
The underlying theme in “Hitch” is that men and women not only are clueless about the opposite sex, but they really don’t know what they want for themselves, either.
“Hitch” probably won’t be the shiniest jewel in Will Smith’s crown, but it probably won’t be as hard on him as flops like “Wild Wild West” were.

SPLICEDwire | "Hitch" movie review (2005) "Hitch" review, Andy Tennant, Will Smith, Eva Mendes, Kevin James
All the wicked charm and confident charisma that make Will Smith a movie star are present in spades in "Hitch," a bright and sharp-witted -- if predictable -- romantic comedy about a matchmaker who coaches lovestruck schmendricks in the wooing of otherwise unattainable girls of their dreams.
One of the romances is orchestrated by Alex "Hitch" Hitchens (Smith) on behalf of a client -- a hapless, nebbish nice-guy accountant ("The King of Queens'" Kevin James) who has fallen from afar for an out-of-his-league heiress (ex-model Amber Valletta), whose assets he helps oversee.
The other involves Hitch's practiced smoothness backfiring on him when he meets his match in a cheeky, confident, fun-loving, resolutely single tabloid reporter (Eva Mendes) -- who is bent on exposing New York's mysterious so-called "date doctor" after her paper runs a picture of the knockout heiress out on a date with the dork.
