The Hitlerjugend was unique because the majority of its junior enlisted men were drawn from members of the Hitler Youth born in 1926, while the NCOs and officers were generally veterans of the Eastern Front.
In the confusion of the withdrawal, the division was unable to undertake a rescue attempt.
When the division was first engaged in action in June 1944, there were several cases of atrocities being committed by both sides (for example, the killing of surrendered members of the Panzer-Lehr Division, and the abuse and death of Obest Luxenberger by members of the Inns of Court Regiment on 8th June, 1944).

In 1943, the 12.SS-Panzer-Division Hitlerjugend, under the command of SS-Brigadeführer Fritz Witt, was formed.
The Division was a fully equipped Waffen-SS panzer division with the majority of the enlisted cadre being drawn from Hitler Youth boys between the ages of sixteen and eighteen.
The division was thrown into action during the Battle of Normandy against the British and Canadian forces to the north of Caen.

The division was enveloped in the Falaise pocket and survivors fought a series of rear guard actions as they withdrew from France towards Belgium, finally retreating back to Germany.

On D-Day, June 6, 1944, the HJ Division was one of three Panzer divisions held in reserve by Hitler as the Allies stormed the beaches at Normandy beginning at dawn.
The division continued to exist in name only for the duration of the war, as even younger (and still eager) volunteers were brought in along with a hodgepodge of conscripts.
The division participated in the failed Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes offensive) and was then sent to Hungary where it participated in the failed attempt to recapture Budapest.

LSSAH was one of the divisions encircled near Kamenets-Podolsk and though it was saved by SS Panzer Division Frundsberg and SS Panzer Division Hohenstaufen it suffered heavy losses and was sent to France for rest and refitting.
The division fought on the eastern front but most of it was destroyed during the Soviet offensive though some parts fought in the battle of Berlin and some surrendered to the western allies.
The division fought the soviet forces southeast of Berlin and when it was overrun, the survivours were attached to the Nederland, 30 Januar and Dirlewanger divisions.

The 12th SS Panzer Grenadier Division began formation on February 10, 1943 and consisted of 17 year-olds from the Hitler Youth (Hitlerjugend), as well as experienced men from the 1st SS Panzer Division and Wehrmacht officers who had previously been in the Hitler Youth.
Although originally formed as panzer grenadier division, the 12th SS was redesignated as a panzer division in October of 1943.

The fanatical fighters of the "Baby division" were now able to put down their arms and, for most, go home to their families.
Many of the Officers of the division were found guilty of War crimes and sentenced to death, not all were as lucky as Kurt Meyer who managed to get away, and die in their own homes due to old age.

Meyer joined the SS in October, 1931, and entered its premiere division, the Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, in the spring of 1934.
Following the completion of a training course for regimental commanders in August, 1943, Meyer was transferred to the Hitler Youth Division (12th SS).
Following the death of Fritz Witt on 14 June, 1944, he took command of the 12th SS, becoming the youngest division commander in the German armed forces.
