Topic: The Hitopadesha

In the News (Thu 16 Feb 12)

World Lit: Frametales (F2004)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-15)
Both the Hitopadesha and the Panchatantra were written in Sanskrit, which is a language of ancient India that is the ancestor of the modern language called Hindi which is spoken by many people in India today.
What is different about the Hitopadesha is that it is the first example we have this semester of an overarching frametale that includes all the stories in the collection, wrapping them up inside one big story.
Since the purpose of the Hitopadesha is to educate these young boys, it is another example of "didactic" literature, like the Buddhist jataka tales and the parables that you read in previous weeks.

 The Sunday Tribune - Spectrum
The main purpose of producing this great work, as proclaimed by the author in the preface, was to educate the young with the help of interesting stories in the science of ethics and political philosophy and to make them capable of facing challenges which are most common especially at the adolescent stage.
Although Narayana Pandit, the author of Hitopadesha, drew inspiration from various ethical works but a big chunk of its material was adapted from Panchatantra, the oldest anthology containing the stories of birds and animals.
With a view to achieve this object, Vishnu Sharma wrote Hitopadesha, a gateway to the science of morality, to be taught to his privileged pupils so that he could make them the worthy sons of their worthy father.

Short stories, anecdotes and episodes drawn from the limitless spectrum of human life are also found to be most effective means for mass education.
The ancient tradition of teaching the children with the help of the stories of Panchantra and Hitopadesha, etc, and the elders by those of Ramayana and Bhagawat, etc, on these lines, has continued till date with obvious changes in the modes of presentations and plots of the stories…..
Realistic nature of the theme and background of the story and lucidity of the style of writing or narration are essential for making this medium of teaching more effective and attractive.

With the developing of Orientalism, Sanskrit culture spread in Europe, and very soon not only the Vedas, the Upanishads and other “high” religious text were well known, but also the Panchatantra and Hitopadesha, both ancient collections of tales.
Glottological studies demonstrated the link among Indo-European languages; the development of comparative mythology and comparative religion, as well as of anthropology in a later period, further promoted the study of folktales.
