Phil Collins : Hits - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
If Hits seems a little inadequate, even though it weighs in at 16 tracks, that's because Phil Collins had such a long, productive run.
No, it's not perfect -- and it's hard not to wish that it was -- but Hits still contains the majority of Collins' solo smashes, and that alone makes it a nice addition to his catalog.
A few of these omissions are quite regrettable, but in the end, Hits is nevertheless a representative and pretty entertaining collection.

 Genesis Reviews
Containing extended instrumental sections showcasing the extraordinary talents of Tony Banks, Steve Hackett, and Phil Collins, as well as the expressive vocals and often disturbing lyrics of Peter Gabriel, this is the album that located Genesis truly on the map.
Collins makes his Genesis lead vocal debut on the acoustic "More Fool Me." The complex structures and poetic risks taken here may throw fans of later Genesis hits such as the cute "Abacab," but it's well worth coming along for the ride.
The sound of Phil Collins's distinctive voice set against a pulsing synthesizer and pounding electro/acoustic percussion became one of the most characteristic and ubiquitous sounds of 1980s (and early '90s) rock.

"I've worked with some great singers, like Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, and once you've had that calibre of vocalist, you get frustrated as a songwriter trying to sing yourself, if you haven't got much of a voice, like me. I knew Paul Carrack's voice was much better, and the combination worked.
With their new line up arranged and with Paul Carrack now the sole lead singer, they've been on the road all summer playing to sold out audiences at some of Europe's biggest stadiums as support for Phil Collins.

This album is a more dark album than the albums that follow, but it is a very good effort and really compliments the Genesis work well.
The wistful "This Must Be Love" is a wonderful, mellow love song with excellent backing vocals from Stephen Bishop, whom Phil was a great admirer of--he even slips the phrase "never letting go" into the song, the title of a Bishop song.

The first time I listened to this album, it was a major disappointment - I had gotten used to the Genesis side of Phil Collins, who provided some of the finest pop-rock in the land.
I gave the album a chance, though, and after a while the album did grow on me. This was Collins doing his own thing.

Hits recalls the days when the Collins name on a disc ensured its immediate embrace by programmers and the public.
Again, HITS might not be a comprehensive collection, but for what was included, it's still a joy to listen to in order to recapture old memories for those who grew up in the '80s.

Namely, the Phil Collins cover "Another Day In Paradise," while well-sung, is an odd choice for The Best of Brandy (considering she originally sang it for a Phil Collins tribute album).
The Best of Brandy is, however, one of the best 'greatest hits' albums to hit the scene in recent years, if only for it's consistency.
The party starts with one of Brandy's first #1 hits, from when she was just 15-years old, "Baby." It's a great, up-tempo beginning to this sexy-smooth collection.

Her soundtrack to the Phil Collins vehicle BUSTER (1988) won a Brit Award the following year.
Known for hits including "Close to the Edit," "Peter Gunn" and the Tom Jones collaboration "Kiss," the Art of Noise's groundbreaking experiments in sampling and mixing proved to be enormously influential on the emerging techno movement, and during the 1990s the group's own material was itself sampled endlessly.
After the Art of Noise went on hiatus in 1991, Dudley collaborated with former Killing Joke frontman Jaz Coleman on the album "Songs from the Victorious City," and a year later scored director Neil Jordan's acclaimed THE CRYING GAME (1992).

Ray Wilson interview - December 1997
Peter Blight (intro): When Phil Collins announced his departure from Genesis two years ago it seemed like the end of the group to some, however the remaining two members, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, have carried on regardless and brought in a new lead singer.
Thankfully I knew some of it from before, and certainly the hits of the late '80s, because obviously Phil had [given the group] such a profile, there were so many songs that I already knew.
PB: Ray I want to ask you about a couple of the songs on the album, the album’s called ‘Calling All Stations’.

 Phil Collins' Serious Hits....Live!
The album makes up for this with a spine chilling version of "In the Air Tonight" as Collins does a good job of capturing the song's haunting air, and from here the album switches gears with "You Can't Hurry Love" but doing so with undefiled perfection.
The drumming is stellar on "Easy Lover" and again on "Sussudio," but the album's only downfall is it's lack of credits, leaving the identities of the musicians a mystery.
Almost all of the songs here broke Billboard's Top Ten, and five of these tracks hit number one, which makes Serious Hits Live truly live up to it's name.

Cons: It stops just short of a Phil Collins guest appearance.
Something’s amiss with New Order, in that, going solely by their latest disc (their eighth studio album), Waiting for the Sirens’ Call, nothing seems amiss with New Order.

♫ GENESIS Second Out - Review
Sorry all you Gabriel fans but the man sounds like he is croaking on the live version of Supper’s Ready while Collins hits it right on the head and Phil does good to excellent versions on everything left unmentioned on the album.
Gabriel`s vocals and costumes were replaced by laser lights, with Collins being himself most of the time, doing some "theatrical vocals" in his own style when the music needed it.
Seconds Out sounds so live and energetic and most of the prior albums, A Trick of the Tail being an exception, sound like they were recorded in a box.

Phil had recorded a top ten hit with his cover version of Dozier's "You Can't Hurry Love", originally penned for The Supremes and when Collins was co-producing Eric Clapton’s August album, Dozier contributed two songs "Hung Up On Your Love Again" and "Run".
Recording as a solo artist at ABC, Dozier scored two pop hits with "Trying To Hold On To My Woman" and "Fish Ain't Bitin'," pushing his first solo album past the RIAA gold mark.
The momentum from the “Why Can’t We Be Lovers” record landed him a recording contract with ABC Dunhill Records.

As I mentioned, the track listing sticks to the hits for the most part, but there are one or two chestnuts for the fans, including "Who Said I Would?" from the No Jacket Required album (which was one of the few tracks from that album that wasn't a hit single!).
