Pulp were then signed up by Island Records who released the singles "Do You Remember the First Time" and "Lipgloss", to modest chart success.
This album, with its disco-infused pop-rock, and the trademark sordid yet witty lyrics about sexual encounters and working class life, is for most fans what Pulp are about.
Pulp then spent a few years in the wilderness before reappearing in 2001 with a new album, We Love Life, symbolising another new phase in Cocker and Pulp's development.

Pulp shared many of those same roots as their peers, plus they were pop obsessives, capturing the intuitive, subliminal things that separated the dedicated from the poseurs.
Pulp, of course, had been around long before they moved to Island, but it wasn't until the early '90s that they truly came into their own, starting with Pulpintro EP and the sublime "Babies" single.
Each album has a different character, a different feel, but throughout it all, Pulp turned out tremendous singles that functioned within the context of the album and as their own entity because they were vividly imagined and sharply written, which may be why they hold together so well as their own album.

Pulp's signature sound is a fusion of David Bowie and Roxy Music's glam rock, disco, new wave, acid house, Europop, and British indie rock.
Musically, Pulp backed away from the folky inclinations of It, adding keyboardist Candida Doyle in 1985, which led to a darker sound; shortly after her arrival, Allcard left the group.
Pulp's set was rapturously received, launching the band into superstar status in England and conveniently setting the stage for their forthcoming album, Different Class.

CLUAS Indie Album Reviews: Pulp 'Hits'
Pulp's twin defining moments are the era-defining latter and the day they made gangly, geeky, loud-mouth genius Jarvis Cocker front man. There's no such thing as bad publicity, as Cocker has endlessly proven.
Still, Pulp's years spent skulking rather happily in indie-land produced some fine and some mediocre songs.
On this song Cocker is almost cinematic in his portrayal of the heady greed and angst of the eighties causing this reviewer to regret that Pulp don't write more overtly political material.

years of their existence, Pulp languished in near total obscurity, releasing a handful of albums and singles in the '80s to barely any attention.
The resulting album, Separations, was recorded in 1989 and reflected Cocker's newfound obsession with acid house but it also boasted some full-fledged pop songs.
The album's troubled sound and somewhat mixed reception led some to speculate whether or not the group would continue; the band's members took some time to pursue side projects such as DJ-ing at various nightclubs and remixing tracks for artists like Black Box Recorder and Death in Vegas.

Although Pulp was formed in the 1980s, the Sheffield, England band didn't hit its real stride until the mid-'90s, when it became one of the preeminent acts of the Britpop boom.
Although HITS is an unlikely title in a Stateside light, since Pulp never broke through commercially in America, the collection does compile the ensemble's finest singles from the '90s to the early 2000s, when the group disbanded.
Though Pulp might have been better served by a lengthier compilation (classics such as 'Mis-Shapes" and "Mile End" are missed here), HITS, which includes the previously unreleased "Last Day of the Miners' Strike," is a concise sampler that works as a perfect introduction to this unmistakably British band.
