The 23-mile stretch of river that flows from the North Carolina/Tennessee state line to U.S. Highway 411 near Delano, Tennessee is designated a Class III Partially Developed River, and for recreational purposes is managed by the Tennessee State Park System as a Scenic River, in cooperation with TVA.
The Hiwassee River and its tributaries was part of the homeland of the Cherokee before the Trail of Tears.

There is a truck that makes regular runs up river during the day carrying passengers and tubes up the river to the dam.

This 18 inch rainbow trout was caught and released on the Hiwassee River below the "Stairsteps." It was caught in 90 degree weather using a heavily weighted hand-tied Dredger Booger.
I caught this 20 inch brown trout below the Reliance Bridge near the silos back in February 1996.
Lil' Drifter gets in on the action below the "Stairsteps." This fish was caught as we were "cooling off" in the cool Hiwassee whitewater.

Three men were fishing near the Appalachian Powerhouse in floating tubes with waders when Jonathan McKnight, 30, floated downstream alone and flipped over in his tube.
Hopefully he is in a place where the river never stops flowing and the fish are always trophy size.
