Hixon Forest was part of a land grant to Judge George Gale (of Galesville) in 1851.
The Hixon Forest Nature Center is housed in a building on the edge of Hixon Forest and used to be a Forest Service Watershed Lab, constructed in 1966 by the Federal Government.
The Hixon Forest Trail Committee is just a small part of a large organization, consisting mostly of volunteers, and dedicated to preserving and improving Hixon Forest and related areas.

"Hixon Forest is a large area that has needs in regards to natural resource management and management of recreational uses," said Hixon Forest Nature Center board member Craig Thompson, who also works for the Department of Natural Resources and served on the plan's steering committee.
Current recommendations suggest the Hixon Forest Comprehensive Plan be revisited by the Board of Park Commissioners on a five-year basis, or in the case of significant land additions.

A prominent family, Joseph and Irene Hixon, bought the property in 1909 holding it in trust until it was donated as park to the city of La Crosse in 1912.During this time, local citizens, lead by Mrs.
Bryan Stanley’s mother, Mary, was successful in 1996 in helping to change Wisconsin law to include a “fifth standard” for commitment to allow families of mentally ill adults to seek help through an involuntary commitment process for a person who is unable or unwilling to seek help on his or her own.
Prepared by the Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation for the La Crosse River Valley Study committee, this technical report details the traffic volume and capacity of proposed north-south transportation corridor plans 1 through plan 4B3, and discussed the forecasting tools used in gathering and analyzing the data.

Hixon was also appointed Research Professor (1934-1939) and Head (1939-1940) of the Plant Chemistry subsection of the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station.

 Shevlin-Hixon Lumber Company
The Shevlin family owned extensive timberlands in Minnesota and Oregon, and the capital that Hixon brought into the combination allowed the company to prosper.
Hixon became president of the company, and T. McCann, a cousin of the Shevlins, became manager of their western operations.
The forests logged off by Shevlin-Hixon have grown back into new forests, and the current residents are more inclined to let these “virgin” forests stand than those who came before.
