Samtidig våger jeg den påstand at uten de helt eksepsjonelle evner denne karen viste i isen, hadde ikke Fridtjof Nansen, og i enda mindre grad Roald Amundsen, kunnet kle seg i polarhistoriens blankeste rustninger.
Hjalmar Johansen ble således den eneste polfarer som tjenestegjorde i begge berømthetenes leir.
I tillegg til sine bjørnekrefter hadde Johansen større tålmodighet i isen enn følgesvennen.

The museum indicated that the boat was Hjalmar Johansen's kayak.
We were told that Johansen's kayak was originally housed at the Ski Museum in Oslo, which still holds the sister kayak used by Nansen as well as other artifacts from the expedition.
Johansen's frame had to be splinted a number of times on the gunwales and the stringers, which I was able to see in two places on the aft section.

 Hjalmar Johansen
Fredrik Hjalmar Johansen (May 15, 1867 - January 9, 1913) was one of Norway's most famous polar explorers and a world champion gymnast.
He joined Fridtjof Nansen's polar expedition with Fram in 1893 and skied with him to the furthest north in 1895/96.
Hjalmar Johansen and Nansen was forced to spend the winter on Franz Josef Land on their way home because of severe damage to their kayaks when crossing open channels in the ice.

As the polar ship ”Fram” was being built, Sverdrup was a ship inspector, and he had the idea as to how ”fram” should be rigged.
Sverdrup was captain on the voyage across the Arctic ocean, and even became expeditionleader when Fridtjof Nansen and Hjalmar Johansen launched their attempt to reach the north pole.
Hjalmar Johansen had the greatest respect for Otto Sverdrup, and characterized him in this way: ”This man, walking aboard, silently and calmly — noticed everything, spoke so little, but accomplished all the more.”
