Hjalmar Fridolf Siilasvuo (1892 - 1947) was a Finnish general who lead troops in the Winter War, Continuation War and Lapland War.
As a colonel Siilasvuo lead the Finnish defence at Kuhmo[?] and in the Battle of Suomussalmi.
His son Ensio Siilasvuo[?] is also a general in the Finnish army.

Siilasvuo had no anti-tank guns and no heavy weapons but he was armed with troops that were mobile and as many of his men lived in this area the land was known by his troops.
Siilasvuo was also aware that the Soviet’s were somewhat in disarray as the northern and southern regiments were having issues with communications.
Siilasvuo’s choice for these roadblocks were outstanding as they were flanked by open frozen water – which meant the Soviets would have to attack in mass over open ground to break these blocks.

Hjalmar Siilasvuo who was ordered to take command of the troops in the Suomussalmi area at 2000 hrs on 8 Dec and to destroy the Soviet troops in the area.
The Group Siilasvuo had received 3 separate companies, which were distributed as follows; one 1./ I T/P-KR (the 1st company of the replacement battalion, North Karelia Group) was attached to the JR 27 and the other two, Er.K Siitonen and Er.K Huhanantti were attached to the Er.P 15.
Siilasvuo accepted the proposal of the commander of the JR 27 to cancel the attacks, especially when he heard from the P-SR HQ that a substantial number of troops were on their way to the area.

Siilasvuo was a colonel that Mannerheim assigned to lead JR-27, Finnish troops sent to oppose two Red Army divisions, the 163rd and 44th, at Suomussalmi during the Winter War.
Siilasvuo fought the 163rd division, full aware that if ever the 163rd and 44th met up, it would all be over for the defenders of Suomussalmi.
The 44th were a crack division, but their expertise was fast moving mechanised warfare, and the terrain meant the had to leave their heavier equipment behind, go slowly with what they had, and the unit had plenty of skis but few in the division could ski.

Siilasvuo's corps is subordinated to the German 20th Mountain Army, and had been involved in succesful offensive operations, advancing towards Louhi.
Siilasvuo naturally could not let the Germans know the true reasons for calling the advance to halt, thus the decision is justified by stiffening Soviet resistance.
