Ho-Am Prize The Ho-Am Prize is a Korean annual award awarded to "those who have made outstanding contributions to the development of science and culture and enhancement of the welfare of mankind," often referred to as the Korean equivalent of the Nobel Prize.
The prizes have been given since 1970, from a bequest of Leroy P. Steele, and were set up in honor of George David Birkhoff, William Fogg Osgood and William Caspar Graustein.
The Japan Prize The Japan Prize is awarded to people from all parts of the world whose "original and outstanding achievements in science and technology are recognized as having advanced the frontiers of knowledge and served the cause of peace and prosperity for mankind." It is presented by The Science and Technology Foundation of Japan.

 Lee Wins Korea's Ho-Am Prize
Columbia physicist Wonyong Lee has won Korea's most prestigious award, the Ho-Am Prize, for his work in particle physics.
The prize, valued at more than $110,000, will be awarded Mar. 22 in Seoul by the Samsung Welfare Foundation.
Lee was cited for his "monumental contributions to the advancement of high energy particle physics." The prize is given in six fields annually to persons of Korean birth anywhere in the world.

Lim was one of 14 Korean researchers from around the world considered for the prize in pure science, said Hun Gon Kim, assistant manager of the Ho-Am Foundation.
"The Ho-Am Prize Committee awards the Ho-Am Prize to those who have made distinguished contributions to the development of our society through prominent accomplishments," according to the foundation's website.

 Washington Engineer Test: Prof Takes Korea's Highest Honor
Electrical Engineering student Melissa Meyer won first prize at the recent U.S./Canada meeting of the International Union of Radio Science for a paper titled “Passive VHF Radar Interferometer Implementation and Observations.” Meyer was among four finalists invited to present their papers orally at the conference in Columbus, Ohio.
The award, which consists of a gold medal, a plaque and a cash prize of 100 million Korean won (about $83,000), is considered the highest Korean honor that can be bestowed upon a person.
In naming Kim a laureate, the Ho-Am Foundation cited his achievements in high-performance computing and medical imaging.

Rohit Trivedi, Ames Laboratory, received the 1996 ASM Henry Marion Howe Medal for his paper "Theory of Layered-Structure Formation in Peritectic Systems." This paper describes the theory on how and under what conditions layered microstructures can be formed in certain materials during solidification from the melt.
This latter discovery was the first observation of the strong force that holds nuclei of atoms together acting in an anti-nucleus, which showed physicists that antimatter obeys at least some of the same laws as matter.
Albert Hofmann, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, received the 1996 Wilson Prize for his contributions and talents in accelerators and for his teaching.

The Ho-Am Prize, and accompanying gold medal and $120,000 in unrestricted funds, is being conferred in recognition of Yu's pioneering research on the frontiers of science.
The prize, instituted in 1989 and considered the Korean equivalent of the Nobel Prize, is given each year to Korean citizens or individuals of Korean ancestry in six categories: basic science, engineering, medical science, arts and literature, mass communication, and social services.

 Bioengineer to receive award
The Ho-Am prize honors the late Byung-Chull Lee, also know as Ho-Am, who was founder and chairman of the Samsung Group.
Yongmin Kim, professor and chair of bioengineering and professor of electrical engineering, has been named the 2003 Laureate of the Ho-Am Prize in Engineering.
Kim will accept the award, which consists of a gold medal, plaque and cash prize, June 3, at the Ho-Am Art Hall in Korea.

With the help of a translucent worm not much larger than a bit of lint, Stuart Kim, PhD, professor of developmental biology at the School of Medicine, has won the international Ho-Am Prize in medicine.
