The Hobart Bridge was a pontoon bridgethat corssed the River Derwent, connecting the eastern and western Shores of the City of Hobart for the first time.
It was a floating bridge, constructed of hollow concrete pontoons, 24 in all, connected together forming a crescent shape, and anchored in the middle.
The bridge was opened to toll traffic on the 22nd of December 1943 and the collection of tolls continued until midnight on the 31st of December 1948.

Hobart left Berkeley to study architecture for two years at the American Academy in Rome and followed that by three years of further architectural training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1901 to 1903.
Some of Hobart's contributions to Pacific Heights architecture are 2970 Broadway, on the Gold Coast of Broadway, designed in 1916 for attorney Sidney M. Ehrman, 2421 Broadway designed in 1920, 2516 Pacific designed in 1921, and 2108 Washington, a house moved to that site in 1921 and completely remodeled in 1925 for the Tobin family.
In 1932 Hobart became the first President of the San Francisco Arts Commission, and later was appointed to the Board of Architects for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition held on Treasure Island, for which he also designed the Court of Flowers and the Court of Reflections.

The Tasman Bridge is a five-lane bridge crossing the Derwent River, near the CBD of Hobart, Tasmania.
On the January 5, 1975, the Tasman Bridge was struck by the bulk ore carrier Lake Illawarra, causing two pylons and 127 metres of concrete decking to fall from the bridge and sink the ship.
The bridge officially reopened on October 8, 1977.

The Tasman of course was hit by a tanker in 1975, and as a young lad, the newspapers pictures were emblazoned on my nascent cultural awareness: two cars hanging precariously over the edge (five had already fallen into the water).
Bridges bind communities, bring hopes and dreams; when the Tasman collapsed, Bill said people wanted to tear the whole thing down, as if the bridge had failed them somehow.
Me son-in-law came and got me and said, 'The bridge's fallen down!' I saw two cars hanging over the edge; one was a two-door GTS Monaro and there was a one-armed bloke in the back of it (I read that in the papers).

Following the completion of the floating arch bridge in 1943 the growth of population on the Eastern bank of the River Derwent was rapid; by 1955 the bridge was unable to carry the number of vehicles required to use it without extreme congestion.
In addition after careful examination of the floating part of the arch bridge following a serious storm from the south, it was decided the life of this bridge in its present position was limited.
In early November 1970, one of the moored half-arches of the Hobart Bridge sank in Geilston Bay.

Surely Australia's most bizarre shipwreck must have been the collision of the 'MV Lake Illawarra' (7274 ton bulk ore carrier), with the Tasman Bridge while she was sailing along the Derwent River, at 9.28 pm on the night of January 5, 1975.
The ship struck pylons 18 and 19 on the eastern end of the bridge bringing down three spans of the roadway high above across her deck.
The bridge was eventually repaired but the ship remained where it sank.

After crossing the bridge I was on the incorrect side of the road, so I mostly walked along the road for a km or two before making it into the center of town.
