Hobart, upon being elected assistant Minister of Trinity Church in 1801, looked to the re-establishing of Episcopalian prosperity, and of those edifices worthy of his energy was Columbia College.
In 1809 Hobart and a Trustee Committee headed by Rufus King were charged with the task of preparing "An Inquiry Into the State of the College." The findings were simply that President Benjamin Moore was inept at managing the College, and treated it as merely an honorary position.
An Epsicopal Bishop, he founded Hobart College in 1822 which he, "conceived to be an outpost for civilized and learned behaviour on what was then the western fringes of European settlement." He then went on to found GTS in 1826.

Freshman Cliff Smith found the net two times as well Saturday, matching his performance in the season opener last week.
Hobart responded with eight consecutive goals, taking an 8-2 lead before Donati stopped the run with his second goal at the 5:28 mark in the second quarter.
Hobart was able to win 16 of 22 face-offs and had 52 shots to the Bulldogs' 34.

 Notable Axtells - Rev. Henry Axtell b. 1773
At Geneva he established an institution of learning, which was afterwards known as "Geneva College." In 1812 he was ordained to preach to a Presbyterian congregation, which he did with so much success and acceptability that they built for him a handsome church.
In "Hobart and William Smith: The History of Two Colleges" (by Warren Hunting Smith, published by Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva, NY, 1972), it's clear that Geneva Academy was already established when Henry arrived in "1806 or 7" (according to the Axtell Record) or "about 1804" (according to the College history).
Geneva College was renamed Hobart College in 1851 after Episcopalian Bishop John Hobart.

While teaching history (1857–63) at the Univ. of Michigan, he developed the idea of a university detached from all sects and parties and free to pursue truth without deference to dogma.
After his father died (1860) he returned (1863) to New York a comparatively rich man. He sat (1864–67) in the New York state senate and was chairman of the education committee, which dealt with the founding of a land-grant college.
With the financial aid of a fellow senator, Ezra Cornell, the land grant was made available for the institution that became Cornell Univ. White, as first president (1867–85), expanded the institution to teach not only agriculture and mechanical arts but also other fields of knowledge.
