Fokker D.I / Dr.I Early Aces Review by DC Shoemaker (Hobbycraft 1/48)
Hobbycraft began with the first-class Nieuport 17 (in several versions, identical but for the decals) and followed with two SPAD XIII kits, again identical but for markings.
Hobbycraft also provides a telescopic sight (which MvR may or may not have used.) Engine detail is satisfactory, and the same two propeller types as in the Roden kit are provided.
Hobbycraft’s 1/32 scale Fokker Dr.I is not in quite the same league as their SPAD XIII, but at $19.95 is still good value for money.

 HOBBYCRAFT 109s
Hi, I’m Tony Hodun, and this is table of 1/48 Hobbycraft Bf109 kit listings I’ve developed to aid you as a modeler or collector (or both) in finding the kit you want to build the version you want, or to fill the gaps in your collection.
Hobbycraft’s early decals were frankly poor (I call these ”old”), but since the early 90s they have included excellent decals in their kits (I call these “new”).
Hobbycraft provides two types, one where the ports are recesses in the cowl, the other where the ports are actually holes in the cowl; not sure why they did this.

Hobbycraft 1/72 C-7A Caribou   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Hobbycraft gives you a fairly good instrument panel, but the rest of the cockpit is quite spartan, missing important details like the crew access door to the cargo bay.
Hobbycraft does this by an application of two decals: the first decal is a red mesh that represents the cargo netting and the second is a flat fl decal that hides the interior.
Hobbycraft’s two radial engines have adequate surface detail and were carefully painted, washed and dry-brushed, only to find them almost disappear deep within their nacelles.

Messerschmitt Bf 109B-2 by Jean Gratton (HobbyCraft 1/48)
The problems comes from the fact that HobbyCraft, in an effort to produce all these variants from the same basic moulds, have overlooked the specific details of each type.
Hobbycraft unfortunately molded this just the same as their later variant.
I did make some additions but most of the changes made are well within the average modeller’s range when it comes to filling and adding panel lines or, even for the matter, making improvements to a cockpit.

 Hobbycraft 1/48 A-4C Skyhawk
Hobbycraft jumped into the fray with four Skyhawks - the A-4C (which can also be built as an A-4B), an Israeli A-4E (with the extended IR-suppression tailpipe), a Falklands A-4B, and an Aggressor A-4E/F. These were great, as nobody had produced an injection-molded 1/48 kit of the A-4B/C to date.
The problem that Hobbycraft had with announcing their Skyhawk intentions so early before release was that the news gave Hasegawa the opportunity to produce an A-4E of their own in 1/48 and announce plans for an A-4B/C in the next year or so.
While not up to the current standards of Hasegawa, the Hobbycraft kit is easily equal or better than the Monogram Skyhawk kit, which has long been the standard for this subject in 1/48.The suggested retail price is also significantly less than the Japanese offering, so the choice is yours.

The Hobbycraft decals were tossed as they are too flat and too brittle.

 Brazilian P-36 / Hawk 75 (Hobbycraft 1:48)
And at Pearl Harbor, P-36s that had been relegated to gunnery training duty, armed with only one.30 caliber machine gun, were among the only US aircraft to take off and fight the Japanese, scoring several victories.
This is one of the Hobbycraft kits, namely the P-36 "Pearl Harbor Defender." I've finished this in both a temporary scheme from the 1939 Cleveland Air Races, and later repainted it to represent a Hawk 75 serving with the Finnish air force.
It's got a somewhat weak interior (there are aftermarket sets for this, and in a pinch you could use one for an early P-40.) It gives no color information for the interior - and given the era these were built in, this is somewhat of a liability.

The model here is the 1/48 Hobbycraft A-4B kit that I built to resemble an Argentinean Navy A-4Q which has no other external differences with the "B" variant except for the after cockpit blade antenna, being larger and of square shape, so no further modifications were needed to do to the original model.
The kit was built out of the box, and the only addition I did was the Mk-82 Snakeye bombs from the Hasegawa Weapons Set instead of using the regular Mk-82s included in the kit.
