The Hoberman Sphere is made up of six intersecting circles, twenty triangles and twelve pentagons making a total of 420 plastic links that move simultaneously when only two are pulled.
With six circles making up the Hoberman sphere and no sharing of arms (not including the nodes) per circle, that is a total of 60 arms (not including the nodes, because the nodes are shared) within the entire sphere.
The FEA analysis shows that the pieces of the Hoberman Sphere are strong enough to withstand the load that would be applied to it.

 Inventor of the Week: Archive
Chuck Hoberman is all at once an inventor, artist, engineer and architect, whose expandable - collapsible structures are both practical and pleasing to the eye.
A basic Hoberman invention is the Hoberman Sphere™, a geodesic globe that can expand from four and half to eighteen feet in diameter.
On a smaller scale, Hoberman has used his folding systems to create, for example, a collapsible tent made from a single sheet of fabric and a briefcase that collapses, accordian-like, to the size of a shoebox, as well as a number of toys.

Hoberman sphere - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Hoberman sphere is a structure that resembles a geodesic dome, but is capable of folding down to a fraction of its normal size by the scissor-like action of its joints.
A Hoberman sphere is not a true sphere, but a polyhedron known as an icosidodecahedron.
The motorized sphere weighs 318 kg (700 pounds), is constructed of stainless steel and aluminium, and continually oscillates between its compact and expanded states.

Other people have compared the Sphere's motion to the opening of a flower and the shape to forms in nature, such as the skeleton of a radiolarian (a tiny sea animal), which consists of struts joined into a sphere.
The Hoberman Sphere is an example of an "icosadodecahedron." As already mentioned, it consists of 20 triangles (icosa means twenty) and 12 pentagons (dodeca means twelve).
The largest circle on a sphere is known as a great circle or a "geodesic." In the 1950s and 60s, Buckminster Fuller discovered that domes constructed using these great circles were extremely strong and light.

Discover Magazine called Chuck Hoberman "the Buckminster Fuller of the 1990s." His unfolding spheres and domes bear a visual resemblance to Bucky's geodesic structures.
Hoberman thinks the analogy is valid, but his work also differs from Fuller's.
The overarching theme of Bucky's work was "doing more with less." Hoberman says his point of departure is different: the idea of making structures that transform their size and shape.

One interesting fact is that this gadget isn't actually a sphere, but a spherical polyhedron created by the intersection of six circles - none of which means much when you're counting triangles and looking for other shapes such as pentagons, five pointed stars and dodecahedrons.
As exciting as the mechanics of the Transforming Sphere are, the best thing about this Hoberman creation is the hanging pulley system, allowing the entire spherical polyhedron to be hung and then opened / closed with ease (original size only).
The original size Transforming Sphere comes with a pulley, hardware and instructions to hang the sphere as a kinetic mobile structure, an educational booklet explaining the geometry of the Sphere and a “21 Cool Things to Do” activity sheet.
