  Wine & Champagne Bottles
Wine was historically stored in wooden casks, clay/ceramic amphorae and jugs, and other containers though some bottles were likely being used for wine storage as early as the time of Christ (Munsey 1970, Van den Bossche 2001).
Wine being one of the most common beverages of the past 300-400 years (next to water and possibly beer/ale) results in wine bottles and fragments being one of the most commonly encountered items on historic sites.
Wine and champagne bottles today closely follow many of the same dominant designs that were used in the mid to late 19th century.

Out of hock by Keith Stewart | New Zealand Listener
Hock-in-the-bottle, not hock-on-the-haunch, was vernacular for a German wine hailing from one of the winegrowing regions on the Rhine, taking its name from the town Hochheim, whose wines – known in literal German tradition as Hochheimers – were favourites of Queen Victoria.
Gradually, hock shifted meaning, becoming a generic name for medium-dry whites, as opposed to medium-sweet whites that were called moselles, after that other famous German wine river, the Mosel.
Hock became riesling-sylvaner and then müller-thurgau, and across the country chablis was being replaced by chardonnay, and claret by cabernet sauvignon.

Revisiting some old wine names, on Starchefs
The wine they produced at the time was not Bordeaux as we know it today; the juice of the ancestors of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot was treated to only one night macerating with its grapeskins, producing what we would probably consider a rosé.
It's hard to know, but these wines were probably quaffable light wines similar to today's Beaujolais in style, and were exported to England in enough quantities to be the everyday wine of England and Scotland in the 14th century.
The wines were stored in barrels, and the saying in the 19th century was that it was better to forget to kiss your wife when you got home for the day than to forget to top off your barrels.
