The Hock Lee bus riots occurred on May 12, 1955, in Singapore.
On April 23, 1955, workers from the Hock Lee Amalgamated Bus Company began to go on strike.
They were members of the Singapore Bus Workers' Union (SBWU) and were protesting against poor working conditions, long work hours and low pay.

Ironically, in 1969 the leader of Singapore and political opponent Lee Kuan Yew abolished the jury system, using Marshall's reputation to illustrate the inadequacy of the jury system.
In the Second World War, he joined the Singapore Volunteer Corps and was taken prisoner after the Fall of Singapore in 1942, working in coal mines of Hokkaido, Japan before being released in 1945.
From 1978 to 1993, Marshall served as Singapore's Ambassador to France, Portugal and Switzerland.

In August 1989, Lee Kuan Yew created a stir within the region by stating that Singapore was "prepared to host some United States facilities to make it easier for the Philippines to host the United States bases there." Malaysia reacted negatively to the announcement, and other ASEAN countries expressed some dismay.
Lee had served as a legal adviser to a number of trade unions and, by 1952, had earned a reputation for his successful defense of the rights of workers.
Lee, a fourth- generation Singaporean, was educated at Raffles Institution and Cambridge University, where he took a double first (first-class honors in two subjects) in law.

In 1955, Lim and Fong Swee Suan instigated a labour strike by bus workers that resulted into the violent Hock Lee bus riots.
The Chief Minister Lim Yew Hock suppressed the riots aggressively and Lim Chin Siong, with many other pro-communists, were arrested.
However, he broke off with the Lee Kuan Yew-led PAP (which now tried to get rid of its left-winged allies) and formed the Barisan Sosialis Party in 17 September 1961.

On August 31, Lee declared Singapore to be independent with the PAP government to act as trustees for fifteen days until the formation of Malaysia on September 16.
On September 3, Lee dissolved the Legislative Assembly and called for a new election on September 21, to obtain a new mandate for the PAP government.
Lee visited every corner of the island in search of votes, and the PAP won thirty-seven of the fifty-one seats while the Barisan Sosialis won only thirteen.

If it means that we have to portray Lee Kuan Yew & the PAP Old Guard as having outwitted the communists politically, instead of being the righteous winners against evil as we normally regard them now, then that has to be our interpretation.
We could have Tunku & Lee, but the subject matter as it is already has to incorporate some kind of meta-explanation of the differences between the Alliance & the PAP, as well as between Singapore & the rest of Malaysia.
For instance, it may not celebrate our SM Lee Kuan Yew’s contributions as much as some people may want, but so long as it doesn’t take too many liberties with the truth, I think it will be acceptable as a “Singapore story” nonetheless.

We've had racial riots in the 60s and religious riots as well (the Maria Hertog [sp?] affair).
We've also gone through ideological conflicts such as the student riots (Hock Lee bus riots) where the government was trying to quell Communism.
However, much of the info on the net isn't very credible and not many people know that (maybe lack of knowledge or not wanting to know anything outside of their sphere of interest could be possible factors).

Based on our limited knowledge of the incident, it appears most of the fans who were involved in the riot and were injured as a result got what they deserved.
On general principle grounds, if a fan is stupid enough to charge out onto the court and lunge towards a player in a threatening manner, he is asking for trouble.
There were no proscriptions, there were no riots, there were no personal repercussions -- the worst that can be said is that people had to stand in line for a while.
