  Hocus-pocus
In 1656 Thomas Ady, published his fearsomely entitled book 'A Candle in the Dark: or a treatise concerning the nature of witches and witchcraft: being advice to judges, sherrifs, justices of the peace and grand jury men, what to do, before they pass sentence on such as are arraigned for their lives, as witches'.
It's likely that hocus pocus is one of the many phrases made from pairs of nonsense words that have been coined for no better reason than that people enjoy rhyming.
Hocus is thought to be the source for the verb hoax.

To remain in Salem for eternity, the gals must reclaim their book of potions, concoct a magical brew of dead men's toes and witch spit, and summon a small child -- they want Dani -- and absorb her youthful juices, leaving her a pint-sized granny.
"Hocus Pocus" is really two movies -- a sophomoric caper for teenage boys and a dark lark for fans of Disney farce, an abracadabra "Sister Act." Both of them are failures.
"Hocus Pocus" is rated PG and is mildly suggestive and slightly scary.

Besides the book's intro, which explains the paragraphs formatting and tells of how the book was written by its author (Hartke), the voice belongs to the protagonist.
The general tone of this book is that America's prime is past-that World War II was the country's "finale rack" (the final rack of explosives at a fireworks show).
A key subplot to the book is the psychological effects of war on an individual-nothing new to the WWII veteran's work.

Midler is the best reason to watch "Hocus Pocus." As the lead Sanderson, she's the witchy center of the movie, with her Betty Boop lipstick design and that trademark, vamp-to-the-gallery, eye-batting shtick of hers.

Hocus Pocus: Titania's Book of Spells | Funny UK Comedy
This book seems to concentrate on love spells, and spells for the family, which seems t suggest that this is another book aimed at a certain market, in this case it seems to be aimed at housewife's with an interest in new age or spell work.
In conclusion this book is the same as all the rest, very little information given, no information to back up why spells or magic works, a little bit of superstition and folklore and superficial spells.

Hocus Pocus: Titania's Book of Spells | Funny UK Comedy
Form: thin, but wide book, a good format for the many page-size photographs; plushy hardcover (don't drop drinks on this!); small widely spaced print, a new paragraph marked by a fl cat head rather than a new indented line, which may irritate readers.
No history of witchcraft or other background info, but also no explanation of the mechanics of spellcasting (as given in "Spinning spells, weaving wonders" by Patricia Telesco), possibly because the author doesn't consciously apply them; the reader is told to assemble the ingredients and get in the right mood, and goes it blind from there.
Many are disgustingly manipulative, reinforcing the stereotype of women/witches as pretty creatures full of wiles; this while the book so harps on purity of motive that I was relieved to read that the wish for a more beautiful garden is "unselfish".

 Weird Words: Hocus-pocus
Thomas Ady wrote in his book of 1655, A Candle in the Dark; or, a Treatise Concerning the Nature of Witches and Witchcraft: “I will speak of one man...
who called himself, The Kings Majesties most excellent Hocus Pocus, and so was called, because that at the playing of every Trick, he used to say, Hocus pocus, tontus talontus, vade celeriter jubeo, a dark composure of words, to blinde the eyes of the beholders, to make his Trick pass the more currantly without discovery”.
Many people today believe that the phrase originated in a corrupted form of the words of the consecration of the host in the old Latin mass: hoc est (enim) corpus (meum), “this is my body”, an idea that was first aired by John Tillotson, who was Archbishop of Canterbury between 1691 and 1694.

Hocus Pocus is one of those books I go back to ever couple of years and re-read...I like it that much.
Certainly, Vonnegut's sharp tongue is present, ripping up academia (and their captive students) as we explore the benefits of prisons run by outsourced Japanese guards, the equivalency of loving and killing, television talk-shows, the mindless drive to wealth normally thought of as the American dream, and, yes, the whole Vietnam experience with his typical precision.
"Hocus Pocus" is an angry book not leavened with the humor and sense of wonder that made his earlier works so delightful.
