Hofmeister kink - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Hofmeister kink (sometimes also translated Hofmeister kick, German: Hofmeisterknick) is a design feature on modern BMW automobiles.
It is a bend in the C-pillar of the car, which is the piece of metal that separates the rear side windows from the back glass.
The kink first appeared on the 1961 BMW 1500 and was named after then-BMW director of design, Wilhelm Hofmeister.

 Javiso Lime Sunday: Hofmeister Kink
It is such a classy, sophisticated and elegant facet of BMW styling that is rich with charisma and deep in character.
"Certainly the BMW element with the most unusual name is the Hofmeister kink, the distinctive bend in every BMW's C-pillars (the metal roof supports that separate the rear side windows from the back glass).
Although it appeared as early as the 1930s, the kink formally debuted with the "New Class" 1500 Sedan at the 1961 Frankfurt auto show and was named after Wilhelm Hofmeister, then director of design for BMW.

When the 3 Series arrived, the low waistline and clean, distinctive wedge shape was new, but the traditional “Hofmeister kink” at the base of the C-pillar signalled that this was indeed a BMW.
BMW designer Wilhelm Hofmeister is credited with first drawing the small forward wedge at the base of the C-pillar in 1960s, a strong design trait of the first 3 Series.
The "Hofmeister kink", as it was nicknamed, has become a signature design feature of almost all BMWs since.

Although criticized by many, this element has been widely copied and has become a staple of high-end automobile design.
Despite the general new appearances, however, Bangle has respected several long-standing BMW traditions like the trademark twin-kidney grille, Hofmeister kink and quadruple headlights.
Proponents of Bangle's designs say that the new design direction represents a move into the future for normally stolidly conservative BMWs.

Proportionally the car is clearly rear wheel drive, and this unique attribute in this class will be key to its appeal. The five door is on the hatchback side of being an estate and this careful balance enables it to compete with hatchbacks whilst retaining the appeal and status of the 'lifestyle estate'.
Classic BMW design cues such as the ‘Hofmeister kink’ in the DLO and the kidney grille are evolved in a design that also features the flame surfacing now typical of smaller and more sporting orientated BMWs.
Unlike the 7, 6 and 5 Series cars, the 1 Series does not have indicator lamps shrouding the top of its headlamps, or a bonnet surface that extends over the top of them as previous BMW designs had, which is the reason the car has a slightly startled, wide-eyed appearance.

One look will be enough to convince you that this car represents the least extreme iteration of BMW’s present generation of styling created under design boss Chris Bangle.
The front end, dominated by a new interpretation of the classic kidney grille and round headlamps under clear glass lenses, is pure BMW, as is the prominent swage line running down the sides and the distinctive ‘Hofmeister kink’ incorporated in the base of the C-pillars.
But instead of the radical surfacing treatment and controversial detailing found on other recent models, the new 3-series boasts an altogether less jarring exterior design with more conventional cues than any of its mainstream siblings.

Place the new 3 Series Sedan next to the outgoing model and there are strong family design traits that provide a visual link between the pair.

As with all 21st Century BMWs, the balance of concave and convex surfaces, coupled with distinct accent lines, maintains a visual interest in the new car’s styling.
