Vintage Guitars Info - Collecting Hofner vintage guitars
Hofner is one of several European (mostly German) companies that built guitars in the post-war years.
Even then, Hofner took a page from Gibson and loaded its catalogues with a combination of puffery and vagueness which leads one to believe that their prime motive was to drive future guitar history buffs to distraction.
Hofner replaced big mother of toilet seat block markers with dot markers on some guitars, changed some of its binding schemes, altered models slightly for export, and were generally up to no good when the foreman was not looking.

 Adolph Hofner
Adolph Hofner was born on June 8, 1916, in Moulton, Texas, a small Czech community in Lavaca County between Houston and San Antonio.
Adolph and Emil Hofner were born in the late 1920s to German-Czech parents and base their musical careers out of San Antonio (yes, they're are still active).
Hofner was sought after for interviews by college professors, students, and authors, as well as TV and radio personalities, all seeking to get a first-hand story from a country music legend.

Adolph Hofner - Free Music Downloads, Videos, Lyrics, CDs, MP3s, Bio, Merchandise and Links
Bandleader and vocalist Adolph Hofner was a durable musical icon of south Texas who helped shape Western swing, and whose dual career as a swing bandleader and Czech dance musician showed the ways in which Western swing had roots in Central European dance traditions.
Hofner was raised on a farm in Lavaca County, TX, and like many other rural Texans his ethnic background was German and Czech.
Though Hofner's polka pieces had a distinctive driving backbeat that was clearly swing-influenced, he generally kept the swing and Czech tracks of his musical life separate.

 Hofner Verythin Classic
Hofner chose not to use the massive mounting ring that Gibson used on it's mini humbuckers.
Instead, Hofner's design utilizes two horizontal screws on either side of the mounting ring to apply pressure to the side of the pickup to keep it positioned.
The Hofner Verythin is as good an all-around guitar as I have ever owned and I've gone through the gamut of 335 style guitars such as the PRS Archtop, Gibson 335, Heritage 535, Heritage 555, Ibanez AS-200, Yamaha SA-2200 etc.

John had by then put his Hofner in to be re-fretted and was using a Fender Telecaster in the meantime.
In the late 80s John and Frank were honoured by being asked for guitars to go into the collection of the Hard Rock Cafe group, which have guitars and memorabilia from most of the biggest names in rock on display at their various branches around the world.
In return the Hard Rock Cafe group gave John a Les Paul custom, and Frank was delighted to be given a very old 50s Guild X375 as he is a collector of vintage six-string electric guitars: it is the blond version of the Guild that he bought on an earlier US tour.

 Hoffner Bass
Here is the beloved Hofner "Beatle" Bass, as it has come to be known.
These were not nearly as desirable as Fenders or Gibsons during the 50’s; McCartney’s reason for buying it was that it was symmetrical in shape and could easily be turned around to be played left-handed, and more importantly, that it was cheap in price.
Played through a on old tube bass amp, it can drive a jazz band with a light, warm acoustic sound or a pump classic rock with a cavernous, rich deep tone as big as a pipe organ in a cathedral.

The bass was a 1963 500/1 model, and we say 1963 specifically because the next year Hofner changed the guitar a bit.
Now, I previously thought there to be a strong possibility, or at least a window of opportunity, for Paul to have done this during a break in touring (July 4, Phillipines show, with pickguard, till Chicago on Aug. 12th).
Either way, if McCartneys' current Hofner is the '63 model, I believe it had to have had undergone refinishing at some point.
