  Hog (animal) - MSN Encarta
Hog (animal), domesticated mammal, of the swine family, extensively raised in almost every part of the world as a food animal.
The terms hog, swine, and pig are often used interchangeably for these animals.
Hogs are probably descended from two wild swine, one species from Europe and the other species from Southeast Asia; they were perhaps first domesticated in China about 9000 years ago, and later in Europe.

Detailed Discussion of Iowa Hog Farming
Female hogs, known as sows, will be used for this purpose until their reproductive capacities decline at which point they are slaughtered or, in cases where their legs are too weakened and deformed from their confined living conditions, they are dragged from the building, killed, and disposed of by the producer.
The hog factories that have sprung up all across Iowa, housing thousands of animals at a time, are not required to treat their hog waste because the manure is applied directly to land and is thus excluded from the point source definition set forth in the Clean Water Act.
Hogs raised in hoop barns have the opportunity to exhibit a number of behaviors that are not possible in a confinement operation.

ARS Research Timeline - Story on Hog Cholera Eradication
Marion Dorset of USDA's Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) demonstrated that hog cholera is caused by an ultramicroscopic virus, and hogs recovered from the disease are immune for life.
The virus remained active throughout the winter in carcasses of cholera-infected hogs buried in the fall, and unburied carcasses of infected pigs remained infectious for 11 weeks during cold weather.
No cases of hog cholera were confirmed during a 3-year eradication test begun in 1961 in Lowndes County, Ga. Ninety-seven percent of the hogs in the county received two vaccinations during a 2-month period.

 Hog Market Cycles
Hog inventory numbers (USDA December 1, U.S. hog inventory numbers) increased steadily from the mid-30 million head range when records were first kept in 1867 to the mid-60 millions in the 1920s.
Hog numbers in North Dakota have followed the same general trend as in the United States with high numbers of over one million head during World War II, falling to a relatively stable trend at just over 300 thousand head for the last 40 years (Figure 5).
Hog cycles will continue because of reproductive biology and lags in adjusting production to prices, but that may be affected by structural changes that are currently taking place in the U.S. hog industry.

 Hog Hunting
Hogs are often so intent on their feeding that hunters can approach very close, much closer than you could ever approach feeding deer without being detected.
Hogs can often be found with ease during many times of year, but much easier during the colder months.
Hogs often appear in food plots, hardwood bottoms, or pine plantations in range of deer hunters on their stands.

Economic Fallacies of Industrial Hog Production
The greatest threat to hog farmers today is loss of access to markets, as the giant agribusiness corporations move toward complete vertical integration of the hog-pork industry.
They may admit that some family hog farms are as efficient as the hog factories, but claim that corporate operations are more efficient than the “average” family hog farm.
If family hog operations are to survive and prosper in the future, it will be with systems that require high levels of skill in animal husbandry and all aspects of production management.

Hogs are quietly trapped in politically correct baited cages in parks near urban areas.
Hog scrambles through a pond, sprints across a prairie, sneaks back into the hammock, tries his luck in Duck Slough.

 Hog Cholera
Hog cholera, a highly contagious viral disease of swine, was eradicated from the United States in 1978 after a 16-year effort by the industry and State and Federal governments.
In the spring and summer of 1997, outbreaks of hog cholera were confirmed in Haiti and the Dominican Republic; both countries had eradicated the disease in the early 1980's.
The acute form of hog cholera is highly virulent, causing persistent fevers that can raise body temperatures as high as 107 °F. Other signs of the acute form include convulsions and lack of appetite.

The award is for the odor nuisance caused by the Wolff's 800-head capacity hog facility 2,200 feet south of the Weinhold's residence.
Odor from the hog operation had caused permanent damage, the court said, marking the first time in Iowa law that livestock odor has been deemed to cause permanent damage.
Ironically, within four miles, new hog facilities housing a combined 12,500 head have been built by producers, many family farmers, that are optimistic about the future of pork production and agriculture.

Hog Dog Fighting: Bloodsport Packaged as Family Entertainment
The crowd is pleased; the dog pins the hog to the ground in a mere seven seconds.
Hog dog fighting stems from hog hunting, a still-legal pastime in which hunters use dogs to find, chase, corner, and sometimes catch the hogs.
While hog dog trials try to package themselves as respectable entertainment, they are often little more than glorified hog dog fights, similar to other bloodsports like dogfighting, bullfighting, and cockfighting.

Pigs, also called hogs, swine, boars (male) or sows (female), are ungulates native to Eurasia collectively grouped under the genus Sus within the Suidae family.
Modern English "hog", which correctly means "castrated male pig", seems to be derived from Old Norse hoggva = "to strike or cut", referring to the castration, but in modern English is often used as a byword for greed.
