When Hogwarts was destroyed - completely and utterly - Matthias had been fortunate enough to smuggle himself away from the castle and into the trees.
Deciding not to travel too far, as he was most unprepared for anything in there, he cruised the perimeters in the shadows and headed down to Hogsmeade, where he proceeded to hide himself in some old cronies stable.

This subject is specifically for wizarding family students but Muggle-borns do take it such as Hermione to learn about the wizard point-of-view on their life before they found out that they were a witch or a wizard.
This is not offered to Hogwarts students but Snape who is gifted in Legilimency (the ability to access another's feelings and memories from their mind) tried to teach Harry this when he was sharing Voldemort's emotions and thoughts.

A rather complicated subject involving (I suspect), some mathematical principles since Hermione's Arithmancy work was, as Harry describes it: 'a complicated-looking number chart'.
I think JK may have based it on a mixture of arithmetic (the science of mathematics or numbers) and geomancy (developed from an ancient Chinese science of calculating the points of absolute balance of all forces on the earth).
Only 1st years take this subject because Hogwarts feels that they need to get accustomed to or brush up on their flying and Quidditch skills when they arrive at the school.

Some of the Hogwarts staff have first-class abilities both in their subject matter and in conveying it to their students.
In the case of the Potions Master, his treatment of his students overshadows his talents as a brewer of potions, while Hagrid tends to overlook the fact that most people lack his instincts (and let's face it, his massive physique) in dealing with the dangerous creatures that are his chief joy.
Binns, to take another example, is so devoted to his subject that even death couldn't deflect him from its pursuit, and the only passion we've ever seen him display was on the subject of historical fact.

Compulsary subjects for first and second year vary from school to school.
At the end of second year, one chooses at least two extra subjects to take, such as French, business etc. This is much like the way Hogwarts works: you have to keep your old subjects and you take on new ones.
Again you can take as many subjects as you like, but this time you only take your chosen subjects.

Creamtea's Wonderful Draco/HBP Theory by Anise
Aside: Have you noticed that the Hogwarts seal is the four houses ‘united around the letter H’ (that is JKR’s own description as given in one of the books).
Draco is being guarded for the DE’s at Hogwarts by Crabbe and Goyle and Pansy, but they are not guarding him for his own protection — they are his prison guards, not his body guards.
JKR makes this utterly clear to the intelligent reader — the fact that Harry and Hermione convince themselves that the use of the italicized word ‘dogging’ was only a co-incidence reflects the fact that Harry can be very dense and very stubborn in his opinion of Draco, and that Hermione is not infallible.
