Pierre Hohenberg, a physicist who was until last year the deputy provost at Yale University, was recently appointed to the newly established post of senior vice provost for research at NYU (Washington Square campus).
In this position, Hohenberg is providing University-wide leadership in advancing research at NYU, coordinating research between various schools of the University, and playing an important role in the strategic planning for the University’s research enterprise.
Hohenberg was recently recognized for ranking second on a list compiled by a professor from Boston University of the most cited physics articles in the past 110 years for his “Inhomogenous Electron Gas,” written with Walter Kohn.

Pierre Hohenberg, deputy provost for physical sciences and engineering, has been selected to receive the 1999 Max Planck Medaille, the most prestigious prize given by the German Physical Society for theoretical physics.
Hohenberg joined the Yale faculty in 1995 as adjunct professor of physics and applied physics following a distinguished career in research on theoretical condensed matter physics at Bell Laboratories, where he had become increasingly active in interdisciplinary research at the interaction between physics, mathematics, materials science and biology.
Hohenberg is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

The tribute will begin at 4 p.m on Sat., April 28, as part of the reunion events in the Journalism School’s Lecture Hall, Room 301, with a reception to follow.
