The 12th (Eastern) Division in 1914-1918
It took over the Hohenzollern Redoubt front after a very short rest of five days and spent a cold, wet and miserable month here before being relieved on 15 November by 15th (Scottish) Division, whereupon it moved into reserve at Lillers.
The area of the Hohenzollern Redoubt had in the meantime become one where underground mine warfare was very active.
A plan was evolved that required 4 mines to be blown under the enemy positions, which would be followed by an infantry assault aimed at capturing the enemy front trench called "The Chord".

The redoubt is described by H.W.Wilson (The Great War) as a “masterpiece of fortification” The redoubt was a strongpoint some 500 yards in front of the German lines.
The flanks of the redoubt could not be joined up owing to lack of working parties and a message was sent to the rear to this effect.
The left part of the Redoubt was heavily attacked by the Germans after we had got to them with bombs and our supply had run out.

He was 23 years old, and a Corporal in the 187th Coy., Corps of Royal Engineers, British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
On 13 October 1915 at Hohenzollern Redoubt, France, during a gas attack, when the trenches were full of men, Corporal Dawson exposed himself fearlessly to the enemy's fire in order to give directions to his sappers and to clear the infantry out of sections of the trench which were full of gas.
Finding three leaking cylinders, he rolled them well away from the trench, again under heavy fire, and then fired rifle bullets into them to let the gas escape.

The power lines continue off to the west, crossing a scrub area (approx 2000yds away) which marks the area of the Hohenzollern Redoubt (the scrub area being the remains of the mines that were eventually blown up below this position).
This redoubt was on the left of Raymond’s advance, thus we can now look back, bisecting the area between the spoil heap on our left and the power lines on our right, at the line of the 2/Queens attack from the point of view of the German troops in the Second Line.

By 2 pm on 27th May, the Battalion were occupying open country just outside the small French town of Vermelles numbering some 26 officers and 957 other ranks, when they came under enemy artillery fire which wounded a number of the men in the supply area.

 HELLFIRE CORNER - Loos - Hohenzollern Redoubt - 1915
The Division's objective was to attack and capture the Hohenzollern Redoubt and the immediate area behind it.
The Redoubt, located on a slight slope that afforded excellent observation and fields of fire for the Germans, was a formidable fortification.
The intention of this delay was to allow the 138th Brigade to attack the West Face of the Hohenzollern Redoubt and therefore hopefully divert the attention of the defenders from 137th Brigade's assault.

Officers were a scarce commodity; for, though there was a momentary lull, there had been heavy bomb and trench work by the Twenty-eighth Division all round the disputed Hohenzollern redoubt which was falling piece by piece into the hands of the enemy, and counter-attacks were expected all along the uncertain line.
The 3rd Brigade of the Division was assigned as much of the works round the Hohenzollern as yet remained to us; the 1st Brigade lay on their right linking on to the First Division which had relieved the Twelfth on the right of the Guards Division.
A series of holding attacks were made all along the line almost from Ypres to La Bassée to keep the enemy from reinforcing against the real one on the Hohenzollern redoubt, Fosse 8, the Hulluch quarries and the heart of the Loos position generally.

The taking of Pommern Redoubt was specially commented upon in the Dispatch of Sir Douglas Haig dealing with this battle, though the Redoubt fell much earlier than was therein stated.
