 ASSISI – Banners of Calendimaggio
Breschi noted that a monte a tre cime all’italiana (Italian-style hill with three peaks) is a common heraldic device, sometimes associated with the calvary of Jesus, but more commonly used to highlight the hilly character of a region.
The flag is derived from the gonfalon and – unlike all district flags, which have no arms – preserves the shield and shows it displaced one-third from the hoist.
Why not regard the three hills as a unit, she suggested, hence allegorically as one rock, hence as symbolizing the foundation of the Church of St. Peter, a k a Simon, a k a Cephas, a k a Petrus.

The Mavens' Word of the Day
The hoist in the passage is not the same as our modern "hoist"; it's an older form of the word, hoise, with a participial ending that ends up as a -t (it would normally be written hoised).
Pretty easily: it's the same concept as "being blown sky-high." The literal sense of the phrase hoist on one's own petard is 'raised into the sky by one's own bomb'.
The passage clearly shows the literal sense, but it's the extended sense we know now, to the point that knowing "hoist" and "petard" won't help you decipher the phrase.

 Weird Words: Petard
If it wasn’t for its appearance in Shakespeare’s Hamlet: “For ‘tis the sport to have the enginer / Hoist with his owne petar” and its fossil survival in the rather more modern spelling to be hoist with one’s own petard, this term of warfare would have gone the way of the halberd, brattice and culverin.
Sappers dug a tunnel or covered trench up to a building and fixed the device to a door, barricade, drawbridge or the like to break it open.
A petard was a bell-shaped metal grenade typically filled with five or six pounds of gunpowder and set off by a fuse.
