Hojjatieh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hojjatieh is a semi-clandestine Iranian organization which is radically anti-Bahá'í and anti-Sunni.
The Hojjatieh is more of an anarchic-Islamic group than the typical Islamic fundamentalist group.
The current president of Iran Mahmud Ahmadinejad is rumored to be an advocate of this group, though this has not been confirmed anywhere.

 RFE/RL Iran Report
One indication of a recent Hojjatieh resurgence was a statement by government spokesman Abdullah Ramezanzadeh during an 8 January press conference that any members of the Hojjatieh Society who infiltrate the government would be dealt with in the same way as other citizens, "Iran Daily" reported the next day.
The Hojjatieh renaissance was also in the news in the summer of 2002.
Hojjatieh's opposition to the formation of an Islamic government because it might delay the return of the Hidden Imam, Malekian wrote, was similar to the intellectual and liberal reformers' opposition to an Islamic government and preference for a democratic republic.

But whether the Hojjatieh is being resurrected by its former adherents or is being used as a battering ram by those Iranian politicians opposed to the current government, its reappearance coincides with a Shi'ite resurgence across the region and a new era of conservative factional infighting in Tehran.

Mesbah-Yazdi nicknamed the "alligator", amongst the Iranian population, is a chief ideologue of the Hojjatieh group who was actually made redundant during Khomeini's years but let me explain how he rose to power.
On the surface, the role of this institute is to spread the teachings of Khomeini.
One thing is for certain though, with all the oil money, and now all the key power positions in their hand, and most importantly the nuclear technology, things have never looked so good for the Hojjatieh group to plan the coming of the Lord of All Ages, the Imam Zaman, the Mehdi.

Founded in 1953 and used by the Shah of Iran to try to eradicate followers of the Bahai faith, the Hojjatieh Society is governed by the conviction that the 12th Imam's return will be hastened by the creation of chaos on earth.
Ahmadinejad, who is only the second non-cleric to become president since the revolution, has made clear his immense respect for Ayatollah Mohammad Taghi Mesbah-Yazdi, a deeply conservative cleric with close ties to the Hojjatieh-founded Haqqani theological school in Qom.
Haqqani's continued links to Hojjatieh, though rumored, have not been proven and it remains one of the most prestigious theological schools in Qom.

The Hojjatieh Society enjoyed a revival after the 1978-1979 Islamic revolution; fearing a communist takeover, Sheikh Mahmud Halabi urged his followers to vote in favor of Vilayat-i Faqih in the December 1979 referendum on the country's form of government.
On the sidelines of the 9 March legislative session, Tehran representative Ali Shakuri-Rad allegedly said that the Hojjatieh Society should be licensed as a political party, "Resalat" reported on 10 March ("Towseh" put this into context on 10 March, when it reported that Shakuri-Rad was comparing his political opponents to the Hojjatieh Society).

Khomeini also outlawed a semi-clandestine group called the Hojjatieh, which emerged during the revolution, and whose members believe that total chaos must be created in order to hasten the return of the Mahdi and the establishment of Islamic rule throughout the world.
Since Khomeini's death, however, the Hojjatieh has reportedly re-emerged in various sectors of the regime, including the Revolutionary Guard, the elite parallel army that was established to protect the Islamic revolution and that bore the brunt of the fighting in the Iran-Iraq war.
In the past decade, at the same time as Hojjatieh re-emerged as a secretive force around the fringes of the regime, the cult of the hidden imam gained in popularity, mostly but not exclusively among Iran's lower classes.

More and more public figures in the Islamic Republic are hinting at their unease about the clandestine Messianic Hojjatieh group, taking over all the positions of power in the Islamic Republic.
The global dangers of this new messianic sect- the Hojjatieh sect- who are now in control of Iran and eventually the nuclear power - are alarming for all those who understand the realities of Iranian politics.
Yet it was precisely the eight years of Khatami's government that allowed this sect to regroup and to reorganize their network of power and influence.

 BrothersJudd Blog: KHOMEINISM IS DEVIANT:
When mild-mannered former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami lashed out in a post-election sermon at the "powerful organization" behind the "shallow-thinking traditionalists with their Stone-Age backwardness" currently running the country, it became clear that Iran's political establishment is worried by the ideology propelling the government of new hardline President Mahmud Ahmadinejad.
Khomeini objected to the Hojjatieh's rejection of his doctrine of velayat-e faqih (Guardianship of the Jurist) and its conviction that chaos must be created to hasten the coming of the Mahdi, the 12th Shi'ite imam.
Such shallow Stone Age thinking is the key to our system and the separation of Church and State--the future of Shi'a republicanism depends on these ideas but also on a recognition that rather than chaos what precedes the 12th Imam is a period of necessarily imperfect rule by the people.

Ayatollah Khomeini banned the group in the early 1980s because they rejected one of the primary commitments of the Iranian revolution: the concept of Vilayat-i Faqih (Guardianship of the Jurist).
Today, in addition to the possibility of Ahmadinejad himself being a member (or a former member), the group has connections to Qom ultraconservative cleric Mesbah Yazdi whom Iranians frequently refer to as the "crazed one" and the "crocodile." Four of the twenty-one new cabinet ministers are purportedly Hojjatieh members.
The Hojjatieh’s belief in humans’ power to effect his return, which, to repeat, are unorthodox for Shi’ites, should be of grave concern for everyone.

Using this belief as their guide, Hojjatieh members refused to become involved in the 1979 Revolution, believing the Shah's missteps to be the perfect spark for the return of the Mahdi.

The idea that such a man, mesmerized by stagnant and violent myth, could soon gain access to nuclear weapons, is simply unconscionable, especially considering the tragic historical precedent of allowing certifiable madmen to gain access to the instruments of mass destruction.

Shiravi - like most of Tehran's secular elite - is terrified of Ahmadinejad's godfather, Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi in Qom, who "believes he can convert all of America to Shi'ism" and who issued a fatwa ordering all of the alleged 20 million bassijis to vote for Ahmadinejad.
He's above all the grandmaster of the isolationist Hojjatieh sect (something he always denies), which was pushed out of government by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in the early stages of the revolutionary government.
Shiravi reflects current consensus among Western diplomatic circles in Tehran that the presidential election was a silent coup - carried by the Revolutionary Guard and the Hojjatieh, with support from bassijis - the so-called "army of 20 million".

But whatever we call him, it won't change the fact that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons and that Ahmadinejad is a particularly kooky religious fanatic (possibly a member of the Hojjatieh, which seeks to foment global chaos in order to hasten the arrival of the messianic 12th imam).
In response to Ahmadinejad's comments, the world has responded with only slightly more outrage than it would if he'd called for trade barriers on pistachios.
