Hokianga is considered to be one of the oldest settlements for the Maori, and is still a heartland for the people.
Rahiri, the 17th century founder of the Ngapuhi iwi was born at Whiria (A unit of pressure equal to one newton per square meter) pa to the south of the harbour, where a monument now stands to his memory.
The first major industry of the region was based around the (White close-grained wood of a tree of the genus Agathis especially Agathis australis) kauri trees, both logging and the gum, the strong thick resin which came from the trees.

 Hokianga's History
Once arrived in the Hokianga harbour they settled, one on the north side, the other on the south, so founding the peoples of the north who are now known as the Ngapuhi.
The narrow Hokianga harbour entrance was missed by explorers credited with 'discovering' New Zealand and remained unmapped until 1820, but over at the Bay of Islands there was an early and rapid invasion of whalers and traders bearing iron tools, wool and cotton materials and of course muskets.
Hokianga did not get electric power until the early 1950's; before that it was kerosene lamps and petrol engine for the milking machine, or diesel generator shared between house and shed.
