  Hokkaido International Airlines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The airline was established in 1996 and started operations in 1998.
It is the brainchild of a successful poultry farmer on Hokkaido.
It originally competed with Japan's major domestic carriers (All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, and Japan Air System), who were able to lower their fares to Air Do's level without seriously compromising corporate profits, thus driving Air Do out of the market.

Later airline chiefs said the scare on the Boeing 737 was probably due to dry ice vapour.
The airline, which reported a $2 billion net loss last year, is looking for $950 million in cost savings from its employees and the rest from lenders, suppliers and creditors.

Hokkaido International Airlines Co. (Air Do) introduced smokers' seats Friday on its Sapporo-Tokyo route to attract smoking passengers in an effort to improve its financial situation, airline officials said.
Nonsmokers will be largely unaffected by smoking on the flights because of air-conditioning on the planes, the officials claimed, adding that they will ask smokers to limit themselves to one or two cigarettes during the flight.
The airline's first smoking flight arrived at New Chitose airport in Hokkaido at around 9:20 a.m.
