São Paulo - Cooperative Veiling Holambra, the largest centre for flower and plant trade in Latin America, located in the city of Holambra (in the southeastern Brazilian state of São Paulo), hopes to reach the end of 2004 with over 14 million units of flowers exported, representing a 300% growth in comparison to last year.
The city of Holambra, which is also known as "City of Flowers," produces around one thousand varieties of flowers, around 35% of the ornamental flowers and plants in the country.
Producers from Holambra bet on the competitiveness of the cut flower market and considered the first year a year of learning, with the need for modification to answer the demands of the foreign market.

Holambra is a municipality in the state of São Paulo in Brazil.
The colony Holambra (from the words Holland-America-Brazil) and The Cooperativa Agropecuária de Holambra (Cattle Farming Cooperation of Holambra) were founded in 1948 by Catholic Dutch immigrants at the farm Ribeirão Preto, situated between the cities Jaguariúna, Santo Antonio de Posse, Artur Nogueira and Cosmópolis.
The cows that were shipped in from the Netherlands by the initial colonists did not surive the heat and tropical diseases so the colonists diversified to pig and chicken farming.

Some 40km northeast of Americana is the small town of Holambra, established in the nineteenth century by settlers from The Netherlands and retaining to this day a great deal of its Dutch character.
The settlement of Holambra (its name is a contraction of Holândia, América, and Brasil) was created by the arriving migrants, who bought a large, fertile fazenda and farmed co-operatively, while the new arrivals established their own farms, specializing - predictably - in the cultivation of flowers.
Holambra maintains a strong Dutch character, despite the arrival of non-Dutch migrants attracted by the town's growing prosperity.
