The range provides facilities for RAF and other (An international organization created in 1949 by the North Atlantic Treaty for purposes of collective security) NATO aircraft to practice dropping bombs and firing their cannon.
The microphones are calibrated to "hear" only signals which pass within a small radius, corresponding to the area of the target.

This year's Holbeach Vintage rally wasn't one of the biggest, but it marked my debut as a Stationary Engine exhibitor, with my recently bought 1938 Lister D. The turnout was good tho, with a reasonable number of tractors, and classic cars, which really made for a great show.
The rest of the stationary engine line looked full, but only 2/3 of what was booked in showed up, but there was some good ones there.
Holbeach is one of the smaller shows, but you get a good crowd of people and you're sure of a good time, there is more to it than you'd think for a show its size.

The post at Holbeach is one of the few remaining which is still dry (these installations often flood), and in excellent condition with much of its original equipment present.
If the Trust were to acquire this unusual subterranean building, we would endeavour to reunite the missing pieces of equipment and instruments, and open it periodically to the public.

In 1536 the Diocese of Lincoln was the scene of the "Pilgrimage of Grace", an armed protest against the religious changes which was followed by numerous executions.
The reformer, Bishop Holbeach plundered the cathedral during the reign of Edward VI, and the restored Catholic Bishops under Mary had little to time repair the damage.
The line of bishops of Lincoln, which had included two saints, three cardinals, six chancellors (marked below *), was brought to a worthy close by Thomas Watson, who died a prisoner for the Faith at Wisbech Castle on 27 Sept., 1584, being the last survivor on English soil of the ancient Catholic hierarchy.

It is a remote Bombing Range located on the Lincolnshire coast around 8 miles North-North-East of Holbeach.
RAF Wainfleet weapons range is one of two such facilities situated on The Wash, the other being RAF Holbeach, there is also RAF Donna Nook to the north of Wainfleet at North Somercotes.
Although an RAF facility, RAF Wainfleet employs a number of civilian workers whom manage the facility maintenance, assist in the control tower with target scoring and deal with ordnance clearance from the range.
