hold out - Information from Reference.com
Hold Out is the sixth album by American singer/songwriter Jackson Browne, released in 1980 (see 1980 in music).
Hold Out contains the fewest tracks of any Browne studio album (seven), yet it also contains the longest song in his catalogue, "Hold On Hold Out" (8:08).
The song "Of Missing Persons" was written for Inara George, the daughter of Lowell George (formerly of the band Little Feat), a songwriting collaborator and longtime friend of Jackson Browne's who died a year prior to the release of Hold Out.

Describing himself as a "holdout", meaning someone who refuses to "settle" for someone not meeting what they believe are the essential qualities for a love interest, he then details the consequent comedy of pain and suffering that ensues as he waits for the perfect person, who of course, he realizes may not actually exist.
So, too, in "Hold On, Hold Out", you find yourself rooting for a guy who finds he has to resort to actually telling his love interest how he feels about her.
HOLD OUT is a step down from Jackson Browne's first five albums, but it's still a great CD.

"Hold Fast" Versus "Hold Out" in Philippians 2:16
Are the Philippians instructed to hold fast to the word of life, as a source of life and instruction for themselves, or are they being told to hold out the word of life to others, as an aspect of their evangelistic responsibility?
The "out" in "hold out" is true in the situation in life, but it is very doubtful whether it is part of the meaning of the word as opposed to the meaning of the situation.
The meaning “hold out” should not be considered unless we can first display unambiguous evidence that this is in fact a possible meaning for the Greek word when accompanied by an accusative object.

 Senator Ron Wyden
The “hold” allows a single Senator to stop the progress of legislation or a nomination in the Senate, and is often used by Senators to force changes to legislation before it proceeds to a Senate vote.
Anonymous holds can stop the legislative process indefinitely, as the unknown Senator’s concerns cannot be addressed to allow legislation or a nomination to proceed.
The Grassley-Wyden resolution would bring the anonymous hold out of the shadows of the Senate, and assure that the awesome power possessed by an individual Senator to stop legislation or a nomination wougld be accompanied by the sunshine of public accountability.

 Hold Out Summary
Everything that's right and everything that's wrong about Hold Out … can be found in its climax: the spoken confession at the end of the last cut, "Hold On Hold Out." Eight minutes long, "Hold On Hold Out" is the LP's anthem, its farewell address and would-be summation.
Jackson Browne does not rock out; Jackson Browne meanders eloquently—sometimes to a big beat and loud guitars, but not so as to cover the words.
But in his new album, "Hold Out," he seems determined to rock harder than he has before, and though the words still aren't covered with instruments, they're affected indirectly.

A quick German victory at Verdun would hardly meet this criteria, whereas Petain’s dogged determination to hold out suited his intentions perfectly.
However, by now out of reserves of water and the fort itself lying in ruins, its French defenders could hold out no longer.

Browne, the quintessential sensitive singer-songwriter, entered the '80s with a harder, more commercial sound on HOLD OUT.
Foreshadowed by 1978's RUNNING ON EMPTY, HOLD OUT is full of biting electric guitar courtesy of David Lindley, and a booming drum sound that crosses the '70s L.A. sound with the burgeoning arena-rock aesthetic.
On "Boulevard," Browne takes a shot at Springsteen-ish street vignette, and the driving rhythm makes the perfect springboard for what could be seen as a worthy successor to "Running On Empty," but this time focusing outward rather than inward, an important progression in Browne's work.
