 Holden Torana
Holden identified an obvious gap in their model lineup, that of the smaller, cheap to buy, own and run economy car, and looked to their counterpart Vauxhall to source such a vehicle.
Although the LC and LJ versions were based on the Vauxhall design, at the hands of the Holden engineers it was inevitable that a good old Aussie 6 would find its way under the bonnet, the Torana morphing into something quite different in the process.
The name Torana is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning "To Fly", and at the hands of Peter Brock he would make the Torana do just that around Mount Panorama.

The Holden 48/215, introduced in 1948, was a medium-sized vehicle fitted with a 132 in³ (2.15 L) engine, and based on a design proposed for the 1949 Chevrolet, that had been rejected as being too small for that purpose.
Holden sold the Nissan Pulsar as a Holden Astra (not to be confused with the Opel-sourced model of the same name) and used the 3.0L turbocharged 6-cylinder engine from Nissan's Skyline designated BT1 in the VL Commodore (1986-1988)(which was specifically designed by Nissan for Holden).
Holden also exports its Statesman sedan to the Middle East as the Chevrolet Caprice, to South Koreaas the Daewoo Statesman, and China as the Buick Royaum.

HB Torana Specifications at My Holden
However, the decision was made to increase local content under the Holden badge, and thus the Holden Torana HB was born.
The Brabham Toranas were marked with speedy style features including a GT stripe (centre), decals on the front guards, mahogany gear knob with motif, and a fled out rear tail light panel.
Despite Holden’s advertising claims, and despite the connection to Sir Jack Brabham, the Torana HB was not all that exciting or illustrious.

Holden suddenly lost enthusiasm with their performance sixes in late 1974, turning its motorsport development resources to the V8-powered SL/R 5000 LH Toranas.

The entry car was the Torana S, next came the Torana SL and then the Torana SL/R. The S and SL were available with four, six or eight cylinder engines (up to 4.2 litre) while the SL/R came with the 3300 six as standard equipment and both V8s optional.
Differential were all Holden banjo style units, mounted as in the LJ and HQ series with four trailing arm links and coil springs.
This was similar to the HQ SS and came as a Torana S with a 3300 engine, M20 four speed transmission, power front discs, front bucket seats, SL/R instrumentation and wheel trims and exclusive G-Pak striping and badging.

Holden's decision to build a mid-sized car that echoed its amazingly-successful EH model came at a fortuitous time.
When the new Torana appeared in early 1974, it offered the same selection of engines as the company's HQ range but in a lighter and more compact body.
Holden's decision to retain 13inch wheels - and skinny ones at that - prevented the use of bigger brakes or tyres that were properly matched to the car's performance potential.

Holden's $3.5m Torana sets hearts racing as motor show revs up - National - www.smh.com.au
The 2004 Torana costs $3.5 million, and is nothing more than a motor show tease, designed to gauge public interest in such a vehicle and provide some clues as to what the all-new 2006 Commodore might look like.
Unlike the original Torana models, which were sold alongside Kingswoods in sedan or three-door hatchback versions between 1967 and 1978, the 21st- century Torana is a five-door hatch, has a glass roof and is powered by a twin-turbo V6 engine that is more powerful than a V8.
The Torana is about the same size as a BMW 3-Series - also rear-wheel drive - and could fill a void in the GM line-up in Europe and the US and compete with models from Mercedes, BMW and Audi.

That's where the similarities end, however, as the new Torana's engine is an experimental 280kW/490Nm twin turbocharged version of the new global V6 Holden has begun manufacturing for various parts of the GM world and which will eventually be used by Alfa Romeo.
Holden says there are no plans to manufacture the Torana, although General Motors product guru Bob Lutz is reportedly very keen that the company should have its own BMW 3-series competitor.

 Holden Torana - Definition, explanation
The first Torana model was a facelifted Vauxhall Viva and featured a two-door body, 12 inch (305 mm) wheels and a lethargic 1.1 litre four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed gearbox.
But by now the Torana was too similar in size to the more modern Holden Commodore, and it was soon dropped from the Holden range in 1979.
It was replaced by the 1982 Camira, Holden's version of GM's front wheel drive 'J-Car' world car, though for two years, the Commodore Four with the 1·9 L Opel unit occupied this segment.

The bent 6-cylinder engine was hand-built at Holden's new Port Melbourne engine plant in Australia, and generates 280kW and a hefty 480Nm of torque, all of which is transferred to the fltop via a heavy-duty 6-speed manual transmission.
According to Holden, some 90 per cent of the 480Nm of torque developed is available from just 1600rpm, which would give it similar burnout capabilities as those of the XR6 Turbo.
Holden's wild new concept car, which at this point in time is being given the official 'not for production' label, is a 4-seater show car finished in luminous, look-at-me pink nicknamed ‘ManGenta’ by the Holden stylists, which contrasts against a shocking "new-tech" interior that burns itself into ones retinas.

Over in Australia, Holden was waging a war with its Monaros and Torana A9Xs against Ford of Australia's Falcon and Fairlane HOs for first place at the legendary Bathurst race and the Mount Panorama hill-climb.
Although Holden produced the Monaro almost immediately after its first showing, it decided to keep the Torana TT36 a concept car from the moment its design team put pen to paper.
Holden stepped out of its safety circle when developing the Torana, abandoning the theory that its concept vehicles must be based off the existing Commodore lineup in appearance, powertrain and mechanicals.
