Holdenby later in 1709 was bought by the Marlborough family, who in turn sold it to their kinsmen the Clifden Family.
The new house in the style of the older is approximately one eighth the size of its predecessor and was designed by the architect Richard Carpenter.
Holdenby House remains a private residence, however the garden are open to the public, with several tourist attractions.

Holdenby House was built in the 16th century by Sir Christopher Hatton, Chancellor to Queen Elizabeth I. The beautiful house is just two miles across the fields from Althorp, home of the Spencer family.

During the reign of Charles I Holdenby was used as a palace but after the King's defeat in the Civil War the building became his prison.

House opening: The House will be open to all visitors from 12:00 to 17:00 on Easter Monday (17 April) and on Monday 29 May, and otherwise by pre-booked arrangement.
Directions: Holdenby is 6 miles north-west of Northampton between the A428 and the A5199.
The visit includes a guided tour of the downstairs of the House and as much time as you want in the gardens.

Icarus Falconry are based at Holdenby House in Northamptonshire where they have a unique collection of some thirty birds of prey ranging from the majestic Black Eagle to the tiny Little Owl.
Holdenby House is a stately home, originally built by Sir Christopher Hatton, who was then Lord Chancellor to Queen Elizabeth I. It was, at that time, the largest private house in England.
The setting of Holdenby House and the estate lends itself well to the ancient art of falconry, and since Michael Hewlett became resident falconer in 2002, Icarus Falconry at Holdenby has gone on to become a centre of excellence.

olmby House, or Holdenby House as it is sometimes known, is where Charles I was kept in "protective custody" after being ransomed from the Scots in 1647.
Holmby house is near Althorp in Northamptonshire, Charles being escorted there from Nottingham by Sir Thomas Fairfax himself.
Charles remained at Holmby House until 4 June 1647, when a party of 500 cavalry lead by Cornet Joyce came to escort him to a meeting of the army at Newmarket.

He delivered the Queen's message to the House forbidding further discussion of Wentworth's bill for a public fast on 24 Jan, brought news of Wentworth's pardon and successfully urged the House to submit to the Queen's authority.
On 4 Mar he attempted to placate the House after the imprisonment of Cope and Wentworth: 'If the gentlemen were committed for matter within the compass of the privilege of this House, then there might be a petition; but if not then we should give occasion of her Majesty's further displeasure'.
The Queen allowed Hatton on his succession to lease most of the property from her at an annual rent of £1,500 until the debt was paid, but for the remaining few years of his life he was in serious financial difficulties.

It recalls the period of Charles l's imprisonment at Holdenby in 1647 before his execution by Parliament.
The 'inner' or new garden is contained within the remains of the early Palace at Holdenby and contains both the Victorian garden and a 20th century garden which includes a re-creation, in miniature, of the Elizabethan original.
The second is the older or 'outer garden'; the original Elizabethan garden which is still visible as you walk around the grounds.
