Matt Howarth's Sonic Space - The Lunar Melodies of Holger Czukay
Holger Czukay was once the bassist with the legendary experimental rock band Can.
The main difference is an refinement of his ability to manipulate the borrowed snippets, enabling Czukay to fuse the samples into seamless sonic currents, where previously the flow had been more erratic, subject to jarring cuts.
It is Czukay's style to fuse these overlapping textures into wholly new sounds and rhythms, achieving quite an industrial edge with his ambience.

 Holger Czukay: Good Morning Story
From today's perspective, however, you could argue that the Can years were a hiatus in Czukay's career, disrupting the continuity from Canaxis's experimental montages of Western and non-European sound sources, to the cinematic cut-ups and splicing of later solo works like 1979's Movies and the hard disk constructions of his latest album, Good Morning Story.
Shunning samplers and sequencers, Czukay cut and pasted his sound materials direct to hard disk ‹ and the result is a kind of seamless digital sculpture.
Well, Czukay's distinctively Germanic sense of fun can appear laboured at times, but his deceptively rich and fluid music is certainly worth the effort of listening through his jokes, even if you have to grit your teeth.

Czukay uses his extensive cut-up skills to lay down a murky, Ovel-esque loop foundation to which he adds a metronome like beat and sporadic fills, sonic textures, voices and the like.
The 38th to 42nd minutes are the most active with percussion and noise stuff and the final few minutes bring it all to a close with a beat absent cloud.

When Holger Czukay was a small boy growing up in Germany during and after World War II he dreamed of becoming a symphony conductor or a church organist; as an adult he has learned how to make music out of radio broadcasts and skillfully edited snippets of tape.
Czukay delights in adorning his creations with vivid details that only become apparent after multiple listens; at first the instrumental "Atlantis" sounds like endless repetitions of a single deconstructed funk riff, but on closer examination it teams with sputtering rhythmic sidelines and momentarily glimpsed windows into unattainable sound worlds.

 Interview with Holger Czukay
Holger Czukay was a key figure in the seminal German band Can.
Holger's role in the group was as bass player (which he dropped in 1976 in favour of short wave radio, telephone, tape recorders, etc) but also, crucially, as engineer and editor, spending hours turning the group's extended improvisations into finished songs.
Holger's solo work has been just as interesting, (a couple of questionable ambient albums with David Sylvian apart), developing the idea of painting with sound through editing and pursuing a music which has a visual character.

This captivating track from Holger Czukay’s 1979 record Movies pre-dates My Life In The Bush of Ghosts by a year or two and employs some of the same techniques, appropriating Persian vocals snagged from shortwave broadcasts and combining them with Czukay’s own brand of hi-life, featuring guitar work reminiscent of another tech monster, Mr.
Czukay studied under Stockhausen in the 1960s and was a member of the German braniac band Can, and was certainly a pioneer in the mixing of “world” music sources with Western style Pop and Art Rock.
Czukay went on to work as a bassist, composer, and producer with The Eurythmics, Eno, Phew, David Sylvian and Jah Wobble, among many others.

I find it interesting that, with Czukay being at an age where his contemporaries are living out fading glories and have a death-grip on the nostalgia-tour-circuit, Czukay and the rest of Can are doing the contrary opposite.
In the liner notes, Czukay gleefully points out that most of this album was conceived through spontaneous experimentation with samples.
The album feels like a great big sonic blanket that slowly envelops you, especially with the track "Mirage." Opening track "Invisible Man" is a piece of mid-paced funk/dub that threatens to become quite annoying in the vocal department until U-She saves the whole affair with her ghost-in-the-machine act.
