(1846-1908), Danish poet and draniatist, son of Dr A. Drachmann, a physician of Copenhagen, whose family was of German extraction, was born in Copenhagen on the 9th of October 1846.
During the succeeding years he was a great traveller, visiting most of the principal countries of the world, but particularly familiarizing himself, by protracted voyages, with the sea and with the life of man in maritime places.
It was about this time that Drachmann broke with Brandes and the Radicals, and set himself at the head of a sort of nationalist or popular-Conservative party in Denmark.

Holger Drachmann is most well known as a poet, but he was in fact a qualified marine artist.
Drachmann came to Skagen for the first time in 1871, and for almost 40 years, until his death in 1908, Skagen was one of the places he preferred to be.
His father was a doctor in the navy and it is said that Drachmann’s interest for marine painting was founded when he, as a boy, accompanied his father on official journeys.

Drachmann was father to Gerda, and he adopted her immediately before the marriage to Polly’s sister Emmy Culmsee (1854-1928), dauhter of papermanufactorer Frederik Leopold Culmsee (1811-1895).
Holger and Emmy had the children: Jens Drachmann (1880-1929), painter, Svend Drachmann (1881-1887),died of scarlet fever, Lisbeth Drachmann (1884-1969), Povl Drachmann (1887-1941), writer and politician.

While studying art in Copenhagen, Holger Drachmann (1846-1908) came under the influence of the celebrated literary critic and political radical Georg Brandes.
Passionate, volatile and self-possessed, Drachmann was a Peer Gynt-like figure whose first reaction to any personal crisis was to travel - and he spent much of his life on the road.
Performances were also frequent in Germany, and Drachmann followed the progress of «Es war einmal», which he himself rated 'a classic in our literature', with undiminished interest.

From 1865 to 1874 Drachmann stayed regularly on the island of Bornholm, where he met his first wife, Vilhelmine.
In 1903 Drachmann settled in Skagen with his third wife, Soffi.
Drachmann died on January 14th 1908 in Hornbæk and his ashes were brought from Copenhagen to Skagen where they in a magnificent procession were carried to his resting place near the tip of the Skaw Peninsula.

The poet, writer and painter Holger Drachmann(1846- 1908), who had been a frequent visitor to Skagen, bought the house in 1902, and added the large atelier.
The house was named Villa Pax, and Holger Drachmann spent the last years of his life here, surrounded by the many paintings which may still be seen in the building.
