Marillion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The brave decision to create a concept album (considered hideously unfashionable at the time) paid off, with great success both for the album (which was number one in the UK) and for the singles spawned from the album.
Hogarth's second album with the band, Holidays In Eden, was the first he wrote in partnership with the band, and includes the song "Dry Land" which Hogarth had written and recorded in a previous project with the band How We Live.
The next album, Afraid Of Sunlight, was released in a hurry, and it became the band's last album with record label EMI.

Holidays in Eden (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This album, Holidays In Eden, is widely regarded by the fans as a setback from all the previous albums due to its high "poppy" factor.
This album is more of a pop album than any previous and most of the latter albums.
It is considered the weakest album they've done in the latter years by the fans, and this also showed in the album charts as it wasn't a hit even though the album has a lot of shorter songs that could easily been number ones had the promotion from EMI not started to vane.

 TWAS 227: Runrig, Fish, Marillion
And here you are, the rest of you, the ones that neglected to get other careers, after nine studio albums, two live records, a best-of and a brief but tantalizing TV-commercial-induced glimpse of potential fame, staring at the end of an era and trying to summon the strength to start a new one.
This album's masterpiece for me, though, and so far my favorite song of the year by a wide margin, is the first single, "The Message".
Holidays in Eden had a couple b-sides, too, the churning "How Can It Hurt" and the lilting (if sinister) acoustic lullaby "A Collection", but the US edition of the album included both of them, so they don't really count to me any more.

Problem is, they're not a very prolific band – their last studio album was released in early 2001, and that was five years after the album before that.
Thankfully, we have Eden's Bridge to fill the void in between, though it's been four years since their last album – there must be something extremely complicated about making this type of music.
Eden's Bridge could stand to vary their sound more from the usual ambient Celtic soundscapes, though the same could be said of Iona at their best.

Holidays in Eden is often slagged by tried and true Marillion fans, but I submit to you that while it's not their best, it still is a great recording.
Just as their following records, Holidays in Eden is quite different from previous releases.
HOLIDAYS IN EDEN is pretty rock- could have seen this one on the radio.

This album, commercial and well-produced as it is, will not satisfy those who still wear their "Jester's Tear Tour '84" with pride, but it is, with the possible exception of 'Season's End', this band's best album to date.
This album is full of 3-4 minute pop songs, well crafted and performed with some great melodies, but is really lacking the depth of previous and later work.
'Holidays' was released after the excellent 'Seasons End' and before the even better 'Brave', doesn't manage to achieve the quality of either and so I regard it as more of an unfortunate interruption in continuity than anything else.

Get Ready to ROCK! Feature about the album Holidays In Eden by progressive rock band Marillion
With Steve Hogarth having eased his way into the band on the 1989 album 'Season's End', 1991's 'Holidays In Eden' consolidated his position and signalled Marillion's further severing of the umbilical with former frontman Fish.
Produced by Christopher Neil, 'Holidays In Eden' is one of the band's most commercial offerings but still wrapped up in their signature prog-rock styling - notably spearheaded by Steve Rothery's chiming guitar figures.
The band were pressured by EMI who wanted an album with at least three singles, whilst Neil was well-known for his pop craftsmanship through his work with Celine Dion and Sheena Easton.

The album also featured a wonderful end section comprising the three songs 'This Town', 'The Rake's Progress' and '100 Nights' which intertwined with each other providing an interesting glimpse of the way Marillion was to go with the next album.
After disappointing chart successes from the string of Holidays in Eden singles, Marillion changed tack altogether and produced what is still considered by many to be their finest work to date, 1994's Brave album.
Interestingly, the vinyl version of this double album came with a double tracked fourth side which would either play the final track, 'Made Again' or just the sound of waves lapping at the shore when the end of the record was reached depending on where the needle fell at the start of the side.

In plain simple language this album is one of the highlights of the year and I was blown away by the musicianship of this quartet.
The title track on this album is a suite in six movements which acts as a showcase for the versatility of this artists as well as stands out as a clear documentation between the relationship that jazz and progressive rock most definitely share.
Following their impressive Out Of Balance album, Acumen are back with another release, their third, which further reaffirms their venture into the world of progressive rock or as they themselves term it, progressive-pop.

The follow-up, Holidays in Eden, was intended as a more mainstream rock album but failed to attract a wider audience.

Marillion - Written by Claus Nygaard
Playing at the Moles Club for the first time Marillion of course had no idea that they would preview material from their "Holidays in Eden" album in the same club nearly a decade later, and that with Steve Hogarth on vocal as replacement for Fish.
Mark Kelly: "We went back there in 1991 when we were writing Holidays in Eden, cause there's a little studio upstairs, so we played the club just to try out some new songs, and we recorded Splintering Heart, This Town, and all that stuff." (Claus Nygaard, Private interview with Mark Kelly).
The band were of course interested in getting under the wings of such a big company and they spend two days recording demos of "Market Square Heroes", "He Knows You Know" and "Chelsea Monday" as judgement for their future career under the terms of EMI under the directions of in house producer Danny Dawson.

It has been widely assumed that Holidays In Eden was something of a mainstream effort by the band, an attemot at commercial success.
The album continues forward with the title track, the fast paced "Holidays In Eden" followed by "Dry Land", a song Steve Hogarth originally wrote with Colin Woore during his time as a member of the band How We Live.
While I still don’t consider Holidays In Eden to be “commercial”, “mainstream” or “sell out” as a lot of hardcore pre-Hogarth fans shout from the rooftops, it is definitely a hookier, more streamlined Marillion and not nearly as complicated as their next album Brave would prove to be.

The next album, the poppy Holidays in Eden, which followed in 1991, was heavily influenced by Hogarth's musical ideas and many fans considered this the biggest let down of Marillion ever.
The album lacked the complexity of eighties' Marillion music, and the mainly pop-orientated songs were definitely not what the fans felt related to.
On the album it's not 100% clear if she does or does not commit suicide (in the movie she definitely does).

The replacement of self-important singer Fish by Steve Hogarth at the end of the eighties provided us with Seasons End, an album which proved that, against the wishes of the majority of the media, Marillion were not going to call it a day.
