Holland is a region in the central-western part of the Netherlands.
Holland is a former county of the Holy Roman Empire, ruled by the Count of Holland, and later the leading member of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces of the Netherlands (Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden, 1581–1795).
Holland arose as a county of the Holy Roman Empire in the 9th century.

It was one of the three medieval subdivisions or 'parts' of Lincolnshire (the other two were Lindsey and Kesteven) which had long had separate county administrations (Quarter Sessions).
The extent of the parts of Holland (the pre-1974 county) was the same as that of the combined modern local government districts of Boston and South Holland.
Holland was all close to sea level, achieving a maximum altitude of about five metres on artificially raised river banks (levees).

Since 1958 the South Holland district had suffered from flooding in varying degrees on six occasions and the seriousness of the 1968 conditions made it clear that works of considerable magnitude were required to bring the drainage up to modern standards.
