Culture Shock: The TV Series and Beyond: Hollywood Censored: The Production Code
Hollywood Censored: Movies, Morality and the Production Code, premiering on PBS Wednesday, February 2, 2000 at 9pm (check local listings), explores how the American motion picture industry practiced self-censorship as a strategy for cultural and economic survival to answer growing charges of immorality.
It was a rash of Hollywood scandals in the late teens and the early twenties that helped intensify the ire of local censors and forced the film industry leaders to address the industry's image problems.
In 1921, comedian Fatty Arbuckle was accused of the rape and murder of a young actress; director William Desmond Taylor was found murdered; actor Wallace Reid died of a drug overdose; and America's sweetheart, actress Mary Pickford, obtained a quickie divorce to marry dashing matinee idol, Douglas Fairbanks.

How to Learn From the Blacklist
For Hollywood, it was the worst of times: publicity-driven Congressmen making headlines by hounding screenwriters, directors and actors; studio bosses sacrificing their employees to political pressure; scores of careers put on hold for years or ruined forever.
The newer documentary was produced by Christopher Koch, the son of the fllisted writer Howard Koch ("Casablanca").
The Hollywood 10, who had never told their liberal supporters the truth about their allegiance, were assuredly victims, even courageous victims, but not exactly in the vanguard of liberalism, a cause that their party despised and that they damaged.

Documentary depicting the rise and fall of a Hollywood bartender whose script, The Boondock Saints, was picked up by Miramax and made into a film.
This raw and unblinking chronicle of the rapid rise and dizzying fall of writer/director Troy Duffy, who went from bartender to Hollywood flavor-of-the-month and back again, is frequently painful to watch.
Overnight is horrifying and fascinating, a half-decent documentary about a train wreck of a man. It should be required viewing in film schools and a cautionary tale for anyone aspiring to work in Hollywood.

Forever Hollywood- Edward Norton Information Page
Hollywood's history has been told many times and in many different ways, but never, it seemed to us, with the idea of jointly portraying the growth of the movie industry with that of the town that is its home.
HOLLYWOOD - A valentine to both the movies and the town with which they've become synonymous, Forever Hollywood is a pleasing and at times moving evocation of the glamour, hopefulness and exuberance that have propelled both the cinema and the city of Hollywood.
The shots of Hollywood from its origins into the '50s are indispensable, but strangely, when the town begins to fray at the edges after WWII, the documentary also seems to veer from its sense of purpose.

Mondo Hollywood - a Movie View review by Ryan Cracknell
Mondo Hollywood is a documentary about 1960s Hollywood, or at least the odd people who called it home.
Most of the movie is dedicated to Hollywood residents that at the time would have been labeled "weird".
Because of the change in cultural tides from when Mondo Hollywood was released until now, what Cohen presents as America's equivalents to sideshow oddities is now a mishmash of underground cultures that have mostly gained acceptability.

Captured in a new documentary, this honest yet loving reply shows, in a nutshell, just how much has transpired between these two men, each among the most dominant Hollywood actors of their generations.
The documentary suggests that Kirk and Michael Douglas had difficulties being fathers partly because of Kirk's father, a poor and stern Russian Jewish immigrant.
In fact, the documentary lacks much in the way of true criticism of the Douglases and their work; the interviewees are mostly old friends and loved ones.

Bright Lights Film Journal | In the Shadow of Hollywood
As ludicrous as it might seem, that is the situation Hollywood has nearly wrought for cinema aficionados (and filmmakers) all over the world as it determines the kinds of movies people will see, not only in the United States but wherever there are theatres — from Uganda to the Ukraine.
And an even more serious breach: he chastises Hollywood and the press for their apparent belief that American audiences are too impatient to deal with subtitles or films more complex than the latest Hollywood blockbuster, who insist, after all, that Hollywood produces what the audience wants.
Certainly there are complicating factors, the biggest one being a conservative government that doesn’t support the arts and a film industry that pours billions of dollars into recycled, safe junk, but it still remains that important films are not being seen because the "people" are not supporting them.
