But when it becomes clear that the villainous Sartain (Isaiah Washington), the owner of the rap label that housed the murdered act, had something to do with the crime, Gavilan and Calden buckle down and begin to investigate.
The way the movie works is, Gavilan and Calden receive the case within the first half hour, and that's about the last we hear about it for another 45 minutes.
To be fair, Hollywood Homicide is more of a comedy than anything else, but still, the barrage of subplots eventually becomes overwhelming.

Shame on “Hollywood Homicide.” Shame on the filmmakers and the actors (including second stringers and cameos by Lou Diamond Phillips, Eric Idle, Gladys Knight and Smokey Robinson) for attaching their name to possibly the worst movie of the year.
At least when Michael Douglas (Hollywood’s other senior citizen getting it on with a hot young actress) made garbage like “The In-Laws,” it was mildly funny.

I think he'd make it in Hollywood (where others like Woo and CYF have so far failed) as he seems the sort who won't comprimise on his artistic vision.
After all, look at Brother, which is also the most Hollywood of his films in terms of style and considered by some to be his weakest.
I think Kitano is too clever to end up making films in Hollywood even if there is lot of cash involved as I think he enjoys just making films and not really caring about the money (Well not getting hung up about it).
