Two years after the cemetery's parent company, the Hollywood Cemetery Association, declared bankruptcy following allegations of financial wrongdoing, the property was bought at auction last December for $375,000 by 28 year old Tyler Cassity, whose family owns and operates a cemetery in the St. Louis area.
(Hollywood Memorial has no security force of its own and has been a popular spot for drug dealers, taggers and the homeless, according to police.) Neighbor Paramount Studios recently repainted the walls on the Gower and Van Ness sides of the property.

Some sections of the cemetery grounds are a little unkempt (more than a handful of tombstones are broken or tilted by overgrown tree roots), but the tranquil area by the lake is beautiful.
And despite their age, both buildings are white and sunny (illuminated by stained-glass skylights), not at all the sort of dark and spooky environs your imagination might conjure up when you think of an old mausoleum.
