Film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
New Hollywood, French New Wave and the rise of film school educated, independent filmmakers were all part of the changes the medium experienced in the latter half of the 20th Century.
Stock widths and the film format for images on the reel have had a rich history, though most large commercial films are still shot on (and distributed to theaters) as 35 mm prints.
Film preservation of decaying film stock is a matter of concern to both film historians and archivists, and to companies interested in preserving their existing products in order to make them available to future generations (and thereby increase revenue).

 Film Genres
Musical/dance films are cinematic forms that emphasize full-scale scores or song and dance routines in a significant way (usually with a musical or dance performance integrated as part of the film narrative), or they are films that are centered on combinations of music, dance, song or choreography.
War films acknowledge the horror and heartbreak of war, letting the actual combat fighting (against nations or humankind) on land, sea, or in the air provide the primary plot or background for the action of the film.
All films have at least one major genre, although there are a number of films that are considered crossbreeds or hybrids with three or four overlapping genre (or sub-genre) types that identify them.

Cinema of the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The cinema of the United States, sometimes simply referred to as Hollywood, is typically used in reference to the larger, studio-produced cinema within the U.S. Much like American popular music, the American film industry has had a profound effect on cinema across the world since the early 20th century.
During the so-called Golden Age of Hollywood, which lasted from the virtual end of the silent era in the late 1920s to towards the end of the 1940s, movies issued from the Hollywood studios like the cars rolling off Henry Ford's assembly lines.
The studio system and the Golden Age of Hollywood itself succumbed to two forces in the late 1940s: (1) a federal antitrust action that separated the production of films from their exhibition; and (2) the advent of television.

Film noir and the German-Hollywood Connection
In film noir, events often occur in the dark of night, and the characters also tend to have their dark side.
Despite many variations, most film noir heroes/villains are paranoid loners headed for some dark destiny, but who nevertheless manage to exchange a few snappy lines of dialog with the inevitable femme fatale along the way.
Purists claim that “true” film noir can't be in color, which would exclude almost all of the neo-noir films from the 1960s to the present.

 Hollywood Film Composers
Another of the Hollywood composers, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, hailed from Vienna and was lured to Hollywood by Warner Brothers studios to add class to their historical epics.
In Hollywood he met James Whale (the British film director recently popularized in 1998's Gods and Monsters) at a Christmas party and was offered the job of scoring The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) on the spot.
The fourth foreign-born film composer, Dimitri Tiomkin, came to America from St. Petersburg to escape the Russian revolution a decade earlier.

 Film History of the 1920s
Most US film production at the start of the decade occurred in or near Hollywood on the West Coast, although some films were still being made in New Jersey and in Astoria on Long Island (Paramount).
Films varied from sexy melodramas and biblical epics by Cecil B. DeMille, to westerns (such as Cruze's The Covered Wagon (1923)), horror films, gangster/crime films, war films, the first feature documentary or non-fictional narrative film (Robert Flaherty's Nanook of the North (1922)), romances, mysteries, and comedies (from the silent comic masters Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd).
Film theaters and studios were not initially affected in this decade by the Crash in late 1929.

But not all Asian film fans are raving about this movie either, some thinking it is a very superficial look at Japnese customs and others incensed that a movie that's about an important Japanese tradition should star three Chinese actresses.
They have been seen before by American audiences, but are hardly film stars in this country, so it wasn't as if they were going to draw in tons of fans on their names alone.
All I can say is, movie makers face trade offs and one is either targeting your film to a mass audience (and in America, that means a generally poorly educated audience) or "narrow casting" your film to people very well acquainted with the topic who will swoop down on any flaw.

Bright Lights Film Journal | Hollywood Yellowface (page 1)
While terms like "artistic freedom" and "nontraditional casting" were bandied about throughout much of the debate, these philosophical terms were invoked primarily to justify what was essentially an economic decision.
During much of the so-called Golden Age of Hollywood, scores of actors, big-name actors, had no moral qualms about taking roles that required them to "slant" their eyes, do that funny walk, and practice their embarrassingly poor "Oriental" accents.
But while the history of flface has been well documented in American film criticism, with such classics as The Birth of a Nation and The Jazz Singer featuring whites pretending to be fls, the history of yellowface has received much less critical attention, and considerably less public censure.
