Holme Moss is one of the most powerful VHF radio transmitters in the country as it puts out 250kW of BBC National FM.
Contrary to popular belief, Holme Moss is not a TV transmitter and in fact has never been one for UHF.

The climb up Holme Moss is less than two hours which made it the best objective.

Set amongst the challenging hills to the North and West of Sheffield, the longest ride, the 87 mile Holme Moss Humdinger included climbs of Holme Moss and the Snake Pass, whilst the shorter Snake Pass Pedal dropped the Holme moss climb but still totalled 50 miles.
However, once on the Holme Moss climb proper, I realised that I was in for a tough experience.
All of these things were true again, but the after-effects of Holme Moss had robbed me of everything but my desire to get to the finish.

THE B.B.C. programme for the extension of television in Great Britain took another stride forward by the official opening on October 12 of the Holme Moss transmitter, situated on the Pennines about 9 miles to the S.W. of Huddersfield.
The Hoime Moss station, which is deigned to bring television within reach of 11 million people, over and above the 18 million already served by the Alexandra Palace and Sutton Coldfield stations, is on the highest site of any British TV trans mitter, existing or projected, being 1,750ft above sea level.
Hoime Moss transmits the same programmes as the stations in the London and Midland regions, which are sent from London via Birmingham and Manchester over co-axial cables rented from and operated by the G.P.O. The signals can be sent in both directions simultaneously.

Holme Moss is a moor in the south Pennines of England, on the border between Derbyshire and the West Yorkshire district of Kirklees (grid reference SE095041).
Holme Moss has long been considered one of England's most punishing bicycle ascents, rising some 400m from the floor of the Holme Valley at Holmbridge in about 5 km.
An earlier mast at Holme Moss used to broadcast BBC television signals on the old 405 line VHF system before Emley Moor took over when the 625-line colour television UHF system began.

In the late 1980s there were two masts at Holme Moss for a time, when the original 1950's mast was replaced by the current mast.
The original mast was due to be demolished during the summer but inclement weather conditions meant that by the on set of winter the demolition was not completed.
Such was the fear that the mast would collapse, bringing the new one with it, we were not allowed to go to work at Holme Moss for almost 6 weeks...

The Holme Moss mast originally built in 1951, the 225metre (750feet) guyed mast was designed for wind speeds of 125 mph at the top and for half an inch of ice on every part of the structure.

The Holm Moss television station had just opened and as we were in the service area of the station we were very busy installing aerials and supplying television sets.
Rhiw was over 120 miles from Holme Moss and well out of the service area, so we declined as we felt that the received picture, if any, would be very poor and as it was a cottage the aerial could not be very high.
The GPO gentlemen had fixed clamps to hold the metal aerial pole to the mast, so all I had to do was to carefully assemble the aerial, connect the cable and fix it to the mast so that it would be pointing toward Holme Moss when the mast was erected.

Particularly in the summer months the Holme Valley Team is available to assist with events such as the Huddersfield Examiner's annual charity challenge, the Holme Moss Fell Race, the Holme Valley Scouts' Mountain Bike Race and Wakefield Hospice's Sponsored Walk.

A little historical oddity is that the channel 13 BBC TV relay for the adjacent dale, Swaledale, was planned to come into service in 1969, but of course by then the conversion to UHF 625 lines was well underway, and the station was never built.
It is mounted on a Belling Lee cast aluminium chimney bracket with a flsmith-made adapter for pole mounting, and this is now loose on the pole.
The aerial would I think have been originally aligned on Holme Moss, just a few degrees east of Winter Hill.

However, IMO, Holme Moss is far better done from North to South, that way you climb the twisty side and descend the straighter side...
From my memories of Holme Moss, I would agree, but my pals are coming from the Hayfield/New Mills area, so Glossop seems a convenient place to meet (and means I get to ride the hill out of Marple Bridge).
I do this loop starting from Hope and doing Strines, Holme Moss and then Snake (which although long is easier than Holme Moss or Strines).

Soon we were climbing out to the A6024 for the relentless slog up Holme Moss.
This rises to just over 1900 feet in about a mile and as the morning warmed steadily, you could hear the cyclists gritting their teeth as they slipped down to lower gears for the long climb up.
Up, up, up, round the corner, up and up some more, beautiful views over the valleys unfolding as altitude was slowly gained, the reservoir and the distant Holme Moss peak we had just descended from.

Registration, the Race Start and the Race Finish are all near the parking area on the east side of Brownhill Reservoir (115056) about 2 ½ miles south west of Holmfirth and ¾; mile off the A6024 Holme Moss/Woodhead road towards Yateholme.

 Emley Moor TV Transmitter
A team of Polish riggers were bought in to erect a temporary mast, apparently they were the only people who were willing to work in the winter conditions prevailing at the time.
The very first Emley Moor was a steel lattice tower built in 1956 to broadcast ITV on the old 405 line VHF system and as such it worked in tandem with the original Holme Moss mast, which transmitted the BBC (only one programme, BBC2 didn`t start till 1964) on VHF until 1984.
This area of high ground is perfect for RF (Radio Frequency) transmission and both Holme Moss and Moorside Edge transmitters are visible

The car is in the garage at the moment, so this afternoon we all squeezed ourselves into the Peugot 106 courtesy car the garage had lent us and struggled our way over Holme Moss to Digley and Bilberry reservoirs for a quick walk.
The chippy is festooned with photos of the cast (several of whom are now dead), which is a bit disconcerting, but the food is good and more than compensates for the somewhat unique theme of the place.
After eating we battered our way back up Holme Moss, stopping briefly at the summit to look at the "Dragon Towers", otherwise know as the TV and radio masts at Holme Moss and Emley Moor.
