 Church of St. Mary, Holme-Next-The-Sea
The casual visitor, having seen the fine fifteenth century tower from the coast road and deciding to investigate, may be surprised at the simplicity of the interior of Holme Church as shown in the picture below.
The first mention of a church in Holme is in 1188 but nothing is known of this building and it was not until the first half of the fifteenth century that the story of the present church began.
In the churchyard there are many graves of members of the Nelson family, who lived at Holme House.

By the time of his first election, he was clearly prospering, for in 1354 he acquired three shops and a garden in Pillory Lane, next to property he already owned; at unknown date he also held property a little further south on Jews Lane.
He was first jurat (as far as we know) in 1342/43 and held that position for most of the period between 1350 and 1371; during the same period he was mayor five times, the first beginning July 1349 to replace John de Massingham, felled by plague.
John de Bukenham obtained the franchise at Lynn in 1344 by graduating from his apprenticeship and is afterwards variously described as taverner, vintner and merchant.

:: Seahenge - Sea Henge: ancient timber circle ::
In the Spring of 1998 a circle of prehistoric timbers, exposed by the receding tide, was found projecting from the sands at Holme-next-the-Sea in Norfolk.
Beyond the timber circle lay the North Sea, which was seen as the realm or dwelling place of the ancestors.
Seahenge was deliberately placed between the ancestral world – the sea – and that of the living – the land, tying the two together.
