Brothers Sherman and Wendell Holmes, along with drummer Popsy Dixon (the falsetto voice), are the group's core members, although they occasionally tour with extra musicians.
The Holmes Brothers are so versatile, they're booked solid every summer at folk, blues, gospel and jazz festivals, as they play a style of music that is a gumbo of church tunes, blues, country, funk, reggae, roots rock and soul.
Early in her career Osborne befriended the Holmes Brothers and eventually took them on tour as her backing band when she opened for Bob Dylan in 1997.

 TheMovieBoy Review: Donnie Darko (2001)
He is adored by his loving parents (Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne), has a close relationship with his two sisters (Maggie Gyllenhaal, Daveigh Chase), but gets in trouble often at school for speaking his mind to the largely clueless administration and sees a psychologist (Katharine Ross) on a regular basis.
Lured out of his house in the middle of the night while in a sleepwalking state, he is visited by Frank (James Duval), a human-sized rabbit with an insect mask, who informs him that the world is going to end in 28 days on Halloween Eve.
Mary McDonnell (1999's "Mumford") and Holmes Osborne (2000's "Bring It On") are warm and touching as Donnie's mother and father, whose understanding attitude toward their son refreshingly goes against the grain of typical movie parents and takes on a palpable realism.

 Donnie Darko: The Director's Cut
This director's cut includes 20 minutes or so of reinserted material, tweaks to the special effects and (so I'm told by hardcore Darkoites) minor changes to the soundtrack.
Unless you've seen the original theatrical release recently (or multiple times), you'll hardly notice the additional scenes, which give Donnie's good-hearted father (played brilliantly by Holmes Osborne), and include cryptic bridging sequences that quote from the entirely fictitious book The Philosophy of Time Travel.
Whether you think the new stuff is seamless or obvious, it's still a powerful film that's even better than the original (if only marginally so).

 Donnie Darko
Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne, Katharine Ross
Mary McDonnell and Holmes Osborne manage to avoid being clichés as Donnie's loving and longsuffering parents.
There are a number of other townsfolk who fit into the puzzle that is Donnie's life (including a senile old lady nicknamed Grandma Death who wrote a book in her youth titled The Philosophy of Time Travel), but it might spoil the film to elaborate too much.

GospelFlava.com - Reviews - The Holmes Brothers (Speaking In Tongues)
The Holmes Brothers had a Gospel project on the Real World label some several years ago (Jubilation) that truly introduced the group, but this latest from the soul/blues/roots/and more trio comes from the equally indie Alligator Music/Stony Plains Records group.
With producer Joan Osborne at the helm, the Harlem-based Holmes Brothers (Wendell Holmes, Sherman Holmes, Popsy Dixon) spin out thirteen tracks of in-your-face originality on all levels.
Vocally, it’s lots of Wendell’s hard-pelting leads, that in combo with smoother backing vocals (both from the other two in the group and from The Precious Three —Osborne, Maydie Miles and Catherine Russell), is akin to sandpaper on feathery silk.

McDonnell and Osborne portray Donnie's parents, and Swayze is surprisingly effective as a variation of the Tom Cruise character from Magnolia.
In addition to Kelly once again, most of the cast principles are gathered, including Mary McDonnell, Jena Malone, Beth Grant, Holmes Osborne, Katherine Ross, Drew Barrymore, and James Duval.
There is a lot of jovial laughter, and while it's apparent that everyone had a fine time recording the commentary, the level of usable content is minimal, in comparison to the Kelly/Gyllenhaal track.

Reflexively conservative, Mom and Dad (Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne) prickle at their elder daughter's (Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jake's real-life sister) bold announcement that she's voting for Dukakis.
Then comes the accident (or is it?) — a jet engine drops from the sky and crashes through the roof of Donnie's bedroom.
