  Holmfirth - setting for BBC TV's Last of the Summer Wine
Holmfirth is a Pennine village south of Huddersfield in the West Yorkshire district of Kirklees.
Although not directly associated with the Brontes, the village of Holmfirth is surrounded by the wild gritstone moors which are so typical of the scenery in this region, and has been made famous as the home of Compo, Clegg and Foggy in the long running BBC TV series "The Last of the Summer Wine".
To the south of Holmfirth lies Holme Moss and the northern edge of the Peak District national park.

An event not to miss in Holmfirth is the Holmfirth Folk Festival which has been an annual event in May since 1978.
The reservoir was built in the 1840s to supply water to the mills in the Holme Valley who needed a constant supply of water to turn heavy waterwheels which were the chief source of power in the mills.
Despite the damage caused by the flood in 1852, in 1861 Holmfirth was a big and prosperous town, with a large number of mills and dye houses in the region.

These pages were originally published in 1910 by the Holmfirth Express and subsequently reissued as a limited edition in 1991 by Stanley F. Dickinson.
We have also obtained copies of a map from around the time of the Holmfirth flood and sections of it are included on the relevent pages.
To the older inhabitants of the district, this republication of the details of that calamity will prove somewhat interesting, but we anticipate that it will be more so to a younger generation, who have heard only disconnected incidents, from time to time, from the lips of their fathers or grandfathers.

 Yorkshire Folk Arts: News: Holmfirth Festival
A group of Holmfirth business people met last week with local folk music and dance enthusiasts, all of whom are experienced in organising and running events, and have confirmed that the show will go on.
Landlady of The Nook, Sheila Sutton, daughter of former licensees David and Angela Roberts said, 'We were very concerned to learn from the newspaper that the festival wasn't going to happen in 2006 and that the organisers wanted to move it to a greenfield site for 2007.
All pub gigs, folk clubs, sessions and workshops will be free, but please be prepared to put your hand in your pocket to add a contribution to the collection bucket towards the expenses of the artists who have generously offered their support and services for free.
