Holon (philosophy) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A holon (from the Greek holos = whole and on = entity) is something that is simultaneously a whole and a part.
A holon refers to a system (or phenomenon) that is a whole in itself, as well as a part of a larger system.
Since a holon is embedded in larger wholes, it is influenced by and influences these larger wholes.

The second property of holons is that no holon is complete in itself, but it is connected through process after process, on level after level with everything that is, eventually with the vast holon which comprises the whole cosmos.
The fourth is that holons cannot be broken down into separate parts, rather the "parts" are themselves holons which are connected to their higher level holon.
Relationships between holons are also holons; the relationship between the holon of the atmosphere, a different holon from the body which is neither subordinate nor superordinate to it, but co-ordinate, and the holon of the body is itself a complex holon.

So a holon isn't a special thing, per se, but a thing (any thing) seen from a holistic perspective.
When you consider reality as made up of holon s, it can be viewed as a hierarchy of small things making up larger things -- atoms, molecules, cells, organisms, and so on.
But that hierarchy is in no way as linear as it first looks; things may be more complex than that.

Holon Tenet One - For Wilber (1996a: 20) "Tenet number 1 is that reality is composed of whole/parts or 'holons'." Wilber argues "… if you start to look closely at the things and processes that actually exist, it soon becomes obvious that they are not merely wholes, they are also parts of something else.
The holon implications are that in narrating, the narrator is situating his or her story in contxts of shared language, common social practices, shared beliefs, and traditions that are given historical meaning.
The key characteristics of a holon include that it asserts its individuality in order to maintain the set order in the tree structure, but it also submits to the demands of the whole tree structure (the system) in order to make the system viable.

A holon is customarily interpreted as a whole that is part of another whole.
What this in effect means, is that whereas the part aspect of the (lower) holon is obtained through being (quantitatively) included in the higher, the whole aspect of the (lower) holon comes from the reverse process whereby the (higher) holon is (qualitatively) included in the lower.
However equally the molecule as (higher) holon is qualitatively included as whole in the (lower) atom in the sense that the atom only acquire its whole aspect in the context of its relationship to the molecule.

Koestler substituted a “holarchy of holons”; for von Bertalanffy’s “hierarchical order of organized entities.” A holarchy is a hierarchy of holons, and a holon, he said, is Janus-faced; it is a whole to its parts below, and it is a part to the whole above.
Reality consists of relational holons, not separate “things.” The concept, a good one, dissolves the antagonism in science between reductionism and holism, for reduction is a way of understanding that moves downward in holarchies while holism is the upward view.

Thus, each of these subtle energy fields is a holon (a whole that is part of a larger whole), and the entire holonic energy spectrum can be easily represented in the Upper-Right quadrant as a standard series of increasingly finer and wider concentric spheres (with each subtler energy field transcending and including its junior fields).
Rather, using a merely Whiteheadian process philosophy, one must construct intersubjectivity (and true dialogical experience) from a repeated application of prehensive unifications and concrescences, all of which are to some degree after the fact.
His philosophy of organism is such a radical break that it is only in the last twenty years that an intellectual climate has emerged allowing Whitehead's work to be received by a wider audience.

Holon Productions’ organisational philosophy can clearly be explained through an understanding of the meaning of the word from which the company was named.
In 1967, the Hungarian author and philosopher Arthur Koestler proposed the notion of holon in his novel The Ghost in the Machine to describe a basic unit of organisation in biological and social systems.
The word is composed from the Greek word “holos”, which translates to whole, with the suffix “on” which, as in proton, neutron or electron suggests a particle or part.

Seb Henagulph's 'Three Pillars of Transdisciplinarity'
Arthur Koestler first proposed the word "holon" over twenty-five years ago in an attempt to show that all natural systems are not made up of 'parts' and 'wholes' but part/wholes.
While investigating these stable intermediate forms and hierarchies in living organisms and social organization, Koestler noted that 'wholes' and 'parts', in an absolute sense, do not actually exist; what is a whole on one level of a natural hierarchy is simultaneously part of a larger whole on another level and vice versa.
The second tenent describes the 'deep structure' or fundamental capacities of holons, which are self-preservation or autopoiesis, self-adaptation or allopoiesis, self-transcendence and self-dissolution.

The map is called a "holon", a term that describes the idea that all systems (organisations) are parts of a supra-system (their environment) while they themselves are composed of sub-systems (units, families, interest groupings people).
In a development "knowledge management" interpretation of the holon the sub-systems are the learning activities of the system (organisation).
Any organisation is the co-ordinating shell in which various sub-systems interact with each other, one of those contributing interactions is the learning sub-system and the container for Corporate knowledge that is the product of the learning sub-systems sharing their individual learnings.
