Holstein (cattle) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Holstein or Holstein-Friesian is a cattle breed used in dairy farming.
Developed in the United States of America from "purebred" Friesian (-Holland) stock imported for the largest part from the provinces Friesland-the main purebred breeding area in the 19th century- and North Holland-the secondary breeding area- in The Netherlands, the Holstein is sometimes also known as the Friesian Holstein or the Holstein Friesian.
Although the ancestral Holstein and Friesian herds are merged in parts of the world, breeding records are often kept by the industry to indicate the percentage of Holstein and Friesian ancestry in a particular animal.

Holstein (Hol-shtayn) (Low Saxon: Holsteen, Danish: Holsten, Latin and historical English: Holsatia) is the southern part of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany, between the rivers Elbe, Eider, and the Schlei firth.
From the 15th century, Holstein was, along with the Danish Duchy of Schleswig, inherited by the Kings of Denmark.
From 1815 to 1864 the Duchy of Holstein was part of the German Confederation, though in personal union with Denmark (the King of Denmark being also Duke of Holstein).

Friesians were imported into the east coast ports of England and Scotland, from the lush pastures of North Holland, during the 1800s until live cattle importations were stopped in 1892, as a precaution against endemic foot and mouth disease on the Continent.
The Friesian enjoyed great expansion in the 1950s, through to the 80s, until the North Americanisation of the national herd in the 1990s; a trend which is being questioned by commercial dairy farmers in the harsh dairying climate that prevails today, with the need to exploit grazing potential to the full.
Whilst the British Friesian is first and foremost a dairy breed, giving high lifetime yields of quality milk from home produced feed, by a happy co-incidence surplus male animals are highly regarded, as producers of high quality lean meat, whether crossed with a beef breed or not.

The fact that annual milk yield for 100% Barca and for 50% Holstein Friesian and 50% Boran is higher than the total milk yield is due to the difference in the date set used for the two traits.
Of the crosses of Holstein Friesian with Barca, the daily milk yields were higher for 1/2 and 3/4 Holstein Friesian than for 7/8 Holstein Friesian (Figure 1), but were less than for the purebred Holstein Friesian.
The decreases in milk yield of high grade (above 3/4 Holstein Friesian) compared with the F1 might be related to the break down of genes due to epistatic effect; however, since the number of animals available for this group were small, the results needs to be interpreted with caution.
